SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,274, dated June 13, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MERRICK F. WILsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Lining Strawpoard, of which the following is a specifica- My invention relates to improvement in paper lining machines wherein a continuous roll of paper and sheets of straw board are passed through the machine and by it pasted together and the continuous paper out to correspond to the sheets of the straw board to which it is attached.
The objects of my invention are to provide suitable devices for pasting the paper to the straw board, and an automatic cut off, which is adjustable to cut the paper to the dilferent lengths of sheets of straw board. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side sectional view of the machine. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. 4 is a sectional view illustrating the snatch rollers and the knife that cuts the paper. Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the means of adjusting the sprocket Y4.
This machine consists in the following essential features: A table for receiving the sheets of straw board on entering the machine, a rack holding the roll of paper used for the lining, devices for coating the paper with paste, means for carrying a quantity of paper coated with paste, giving time for the paper to stretch under the action of the paste before it is attached to the straw board. Means for compressing the paper and straw board together, and devices for cutting the continuous sheet of paper to correspond to the sheets of straw board.
Let A be the frame of the machine on the top and forward end of which thereis a bracket supporting the roll of paper B for the lining, which roll is supported on an axis in bearings b b and the paper from this roll is trained down between the rolls D and D. The paper passes from these rolls up and down over the idle rolls F, F, F F F F which allows time for the paper to stretch under the action of the paste and from these rolls the paper passes to the compression rolls G G where it meets and is attached to the sheet of straw board H which the operator places on the table I, which is provided with an adjustable guide J, which guides the sheet of straw board into the machine. The sheet of straw board-is shoved forward by the operator until in contact with the feeding roll K,which is adjustable by the screw is, which roll feeds the sheet of straw board into the rolls G G, which compress it and the paper together. The operator feeds the sheets of straw board following each other, leaving about three-fourths of an inch between each sheet. The pressure on the paper and straw board through the rolls G and G is adjustable by the screw g; from here the sheet of straw board with the paper lining passes along resting on the guide bars L which guide it between the rolls M, M, which are supported on a carriage O which is adj ustable longitudinally on ways a on the frame A and is moved in adjusting by means of the hand wheel P on the axis of which is fastened the sprocket P which carries a chain P which is fastened to the carriage O at P and is trained over the sprocket P The carriage O -is held in a fixed position by the clamp screws P Back of the rolls M, M there is a saw toothed knife Q, which is held in bearing g, on the carriage O, and is adj ustable in the angle that it presents to the paper by being revolved in the bearings q; above and forward of the knife Q there is a rod R, extending across the frame. The sheet of lined straw board passes through the rolls M, M and under the rod R, and over the knife Q and thence down the ways W and between the feed rolls 8,8 which are geared to drive the board a little faster than the'rolls M, M and serve to draw the board along and take out the slack made by the curve of the board in leaving the rolls M, M and feed it'between the snatch rolls T, T which are geared to .drive the board faster than the rolls G, G
and M, M, and as soon as the lined sheet of straw board comes between the rolls T, T it immediately commences to move faster than the sheet following and as the rear end of this sheet is over the edge of the knife Q simultaneously with the entering of the forward end between the snatch rolls T, T the sheet is drawn downward and forward with a jerk which brings the continuous paper, lining the straw board, down on to the knife edge Q thereby cutting it asunder, and the sheet thus separated is shoved out after it has passed through the snatch rolls on to the table for its reception. The snatch rolls T, T are preferably set at a small angle with the direction of the advance of the sheet of straw board in order that they will catch one corner of the sheet first thereby exerting a tearing action on the paper lining, over the knife, that is by catching one edge of the sheet first it brings the lining in contact with the knife at one edge first and thereby makes a shearing action across the knife. The angle in which the rolls T. T. are set is so small as hardly to be noticed with the eye and the drawing being of so small a scale it is scarcely discernible.
The rollers T, T are adjusted to each other by the set screws t. The rolls S, S and the roll K are merely disks as they suffice for feeding the sheets of straw board. The roll S is connected to its driving axis by means of a ratchet in order that it may drive the sheet of straw board but not be driven by it when it is being carried, but by the snatch rolls T, T. The rolls M, M serve to feed thelined straw board forward after it has passed out of the influence of the rolls G, G and before it comes under the influence of the rolls S, S and also serves to hold the rear sheet of straw board while thelining connecting it. and the forward one is being cut off; the rod R serves to hold the end of the rear sheet from being curved upward and thereby loosening the lining by the bending down of the forward sheet over the edge of the knife Q. The carriage O by.
being moved backward or forward may be adjusted to bring the knife Q at the proper point to cut the paper lining to fit different sized lengths of sheets of straw board. The machine is driven by the pulley V which is connected to the driving shaft V by a friction clutch V actuated by hand lever V On the end of the driving shaft V there are gears V driving the rolls G, G and on the shaft of the roll G there is a sprocket whose chain 0 drives the sprocket of the roll K. The paste rolls D, D are driven by gears X from the driving shaft V. A sprocket on the driving shaft V drives chain 0 which passes over an idler Y and under a sprocket Y on the roll M, thereby driving the rolls M, M and thence over an idler Y and thence over sprocket Y on shaft of roll S, thereby driving roll S and then to and over sprocket on roll T, thereby driving rolls T, T and thence back under an idler Y to the driving sprocket. The idler Y is adjustable, permitting the slack to be taken out of the chain 0'. This adjustment .is shown by Fig. 5. The sprocket Y is pivoted on the end of the lever 3 which in turn is pivoted on to the frame of the machine at 1 and is held in place by the clamp screw 1 the head of which isheld in the slotted baryt What I claim is- 1. In a paper lining machine wherein contin nous paper is pasted to sheets substantially as described and the continuous paper out to conform to the sheets: the combination of the knife Q, feed rollers M. M. the snatch rollers T. T the rod R. and adjustable carriage 0. arranged substantially as described.
2. A paper lining machine of the form and purpose described which consists of means for coating the paper with adhesive material, means for carrying a quantity of said paper permitting time for the action of the adhesive material on the paper, rollers for compressv ing the continuous paper to the sheets, means for advancing the stock thus lined into an automatic cutting off device which device consists of a set of feed rollers; a knife and a set of snatch rollers, said snatch rollers geared to drive the stock at a higher rate of speed than the feed rollers, said feed rollers arranged in advance of the knife, whereby they serve to feed the sheet forward, and to prevent the 1 sheet being pulled forward during the cutting of the connected lining, substantially as described.
3. A paper lining machine which consists of mechanism for coating continuous paper with adhesive material and for pressing said paper so coated in contact with sheets of straw board, and an automatic cutting off device for the purpose of cutting the paper lining between the sheets to which it is attached, said device consisting of a set of feed rolls a knife, anda carriage on which the same are located, with suitable guides securing the paper from the pasting mechanism, and directing it into the feed rolls of the cutting 01f device; a set of snatch rolls with relation to which said feed rolls and knife are adjustable said rolls being geared to drive the stock faster than the feed rolls, before mentioned, and receive the lined stock after it has passed said feed rolls and knife and draw it upon the knife and thus separate the connected lining, substantially as shown and described.
4:. A paper lining machine of the form and purpose described wherein continuous paper is pasted to sheets and the continuous paper out to conform to the sheets: the combination of a set of feed rolls M. M and a knife Q. and
. a set of feed rolls S. S. adjusted to feed the sheet and take up the slack thereof, and a set of snatch rolls T. T substantially as described.
5. A paper lining machine'which consists substantially of mechanism for pasting continuous paper to sheets and cutting the connected lining between the sheets after it is pasted thereto, which cutting mechanism consists essentially of a knife Q. and a set of snatch rolls T. T. set outside the line of the direct advance of the lined stock, whereby an angle is produced in the lined stock over the knife Q. at the point desired to sever the connected lining, substantially as shown.
6. A paper lining machine substantially as described, consisting essentially of the rollers G. G and the knife Q. and snatch rolls T. T said knife Q. adjustable in the angle its cutting edge presents to the paper substantially as described.
7. A paper lining machine substantially as described which consists essentially of the rolls G. G. and the snatch rolls T. T .geared to drive the stock faster than it is delivered by the rolls G. G. said rolls T. T". set at a for cutting the lined stock combined with the snatch rolls T. T substantially as described.
