SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,237, dated .Tune 13, 1893.
Application filed April 5, 1893. Serial No. 469,133. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM ME.LINDsEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dennysville, in the county of Guilford and State of North Carolina, have invented -a new and useful Washing-Machine, of which th following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in washing machines. j
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of washing machines, and to provide a simple and effective one which will quickly wash clothes without liability of wearing, tearing or otherwise injuring them.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.

1 designates a washing machine body or tub, having axles 2 and 3 and mounted on wheels 4 and 5 to enable the washing machine to be readily moved from one place to another. The washing machine bodyl is preferably rectangular, and is provided at opposite sides with sockets 6 receiving parallel handle bars 7, which are connected at their outer ends by a handle 8. The bottom of the washing machine body is extended forward to form a platform, or shelf 9, which is pointed atthe front, and which has mounted on it at a central. point an oscillating upright 10. The upright has its lower end 11 reduced and arranged in an opening 12 of the shelf or platform 9, and is secured thereto by a removable pin 13, which is located beneath the shelf and arranged in a perforation of the upright. At
each side of the upright is disposed one side of a bow, which has its top secured in a perforation of the upright and their lower ends arranged in perforations 16 of the platform 9.
The platform is provided on its upper and lower faces with metal plates arranged around the opening 12; and the pin 13 tapers andhas one end cut away to enable it to pass the adjacent side ofthe bow, when the cut away portion 17 is arranged horizontal; and by turning the pin to bring the cutaway portion in a vertical position, the pin will be prevented froin leaving the perforation of the upright by the lower end of one side of the bow.
The upper end of the uprightis provided with a vertical opening 18 to receive the forward end of a. resilient operating lever 19; and is provided with a vertical seriesof perforations20 to permit a vertical adjustment of the operating lever by means of a pin 2l, which pivots the forward end of the operating lever to the upright. The operating lever has its lower side cut away or recessed throughout its length to make it resilient; its rear end 22 is shaped into a handle; and it is provided slightly in advance of the latter with a longitudinal opening 23, in which is adjustably secu-red a resilient stem 24 of aroll supporting frame 25. The stem 24is cut away nearly throughout its length to make it resilient, and its upper end is slightly enlarged. The adjustment of the upper end of the stem is obtained by means of a series of perforations 26 and a bolt 27. The lower end of the resilient stem is reduced and is secured by a pin or other fastening device in an opening or mortise of a cross piece 28 of the roll supporting frame. The roll supporting frame consists of the said cross-piece and arms 29, which are provided at their lower ends with bearing openings receiving journals 30 of a roll 31. The upper ends 32 of the arms 29 are reduced and detachably secured by pins 33 in openings 34 of the cross-piece 28.
The roll which is detachably secured in its supporting frame is provided with series of holes or recesses and is adapted to pass over the clothes to compress the water from them and to create suflicient suction to remove quickly the dirt and stains without wearing, tearingpor otherwise injuring the clothes.
The openings of the platform 9 are sufficiently large to permit the upright to have an oscillation and the bows to move with the upright; this permits the roll to have greater freedom of movement and enables the operation of washing to be performed more eectively than would be the case were the uprights stationary. The adjustment of the forward end of the resilient lever, and that of the upper end of the stem enables this movement to be controlled; and the construction of the operating lever and the stem imparts a spring action to the roll and causes the latter to spring quickly from the clothes as soon as the pressure on the handle is removed. By this construction the operation of washing is quickly and effectively performed Without liability of injuring the fabrics.
Changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction maybe resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
The front of the washing machine body is provided at the top with a hinged cover-section to prevent water splashing from the body at the forward stroke or movement of the roll.
The bottom of the body is provided near its rear end with a discharge opening or vent for emptying the water when the operator is through with it, and to facilitate the emptying, the body is slightly inclined downward from front to rear. This result, the inclination of the bottom, may be readily obtained by making the front wheels of greater diameter than the rear ones. During the operation of Washing, the vent is closed by a plug or stopper 36.
In a washing machine, the combination of a body provided at its front with a platform and having a central opening and oppositely disposed perforations, an oscillating upright having its lower end reduced and arranged in the central opening and provided at the top with a vertical opening and a series of perforations, the supporting bow arranged at opposite sides of the upright and having its top secured thereto, and its ends arranged in the perforations of the platform, said bow moving with the oscillating upright, a resilient operating lever having its forward end arranged in a vertical opening of the upright and having its lower edge out away and provided near its handle end with an opening, a pin adj ustably securing the operating lever to the upright, a roll, a supporting frame having the roll journaled therein and arranged Within the body, and the resilient stern having its lower end secured to the supporting frame and being cut away throughout its length and having its upper end adj ustably secured in the opening of the operating lever, substantially as described.
