ELBERT M. GURNEE, OF WESTPORT, MISSOURI.
CAR-PLATFORM HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,106, dated June 6, 1893.
Application filed August 3, 1892. Serial No. 442,043. (No model.)
T0 at who it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELBERT M. GURNEE, of Westport, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Passenger-Car-Platform Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvementsin removable platforms for passenger cars; and my invention consists in certain features of novelty hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I, represents a plan view of my improved device showing the platform removed. Fig. II, is a longitudinal vertical section taken on line II, II, Fig. I, showing the platform in position. Fig. III, is a foreshortened view of the platform. Fig. IV, is an enlarged detail perspective showing the bracket, link and screw bolt, by which the platform is secured to the frame. Fig. V, is a longitudinal, sectional view of the bracket showing, the screw bolt and link in the position they assume when the platform is fastened to the frame.
Referring to the drawings: 1, represents the buffer, 2, the buffer frame, 3, the coupling, 4 the draw bar, 5, the buffer bar, and 6, a spring on the buifer bar.
7, represents the rear frame of the platform, which is connected with the buffer frame 2 by a series of cross-frames, 8, 9.
10, represents the movable platform which fits in between the buffer frame 2, and the rear cross frame 7. The platform 10, which is removable, is held in position by means of U shaped links 11, pivoted on the underside of the platform 10, by means of cross pieces 12, suitably secured to the platform. The links 11, are arranged with a horizontal portion 13, connecting the vertical portions of the same with each other, said portions 13 forming a bearing by which the links are pivoted to the cross pieces 12, said links being placed at an angle with the cross pieces which form their support.
14, represents brackets secured to the cross frames 9, as shown at 15, by means of plates 16, which are an integral part of said brackets, The brackets 14, are provided with rounded elongated portions 17, having central screw-threaded openings 18, in which engage screw-bolts 19, having squared ends 20, for screwing the same into the brackets. The screw-bolts 19, are provided with double threads 21, one of said threads being of the same depth throughout in order to engage the female thread in the rounded portion 17, and the other thread being a diminishing thread, which terminates on the shank of the screwbolt, as shown at 22.
23, represents an opening in the rounded portion 17, of the bracket, said opening extending through said rounded portion at an angle, so as to permit the angling link 11, connected with the platform to extend down through the same, there being a recess 24, in the bracket intowh'ich the lower end of the link extends.
In operation, when the platform has been placed in position on the platform frame, the links 11, will extend into the angling openings 23, in the brackets 14. Then as the screw-bolt 19, is placed in position in the rounded portion 17, of the brackets, and by suitable means screwed inward, as shown in I Fig. V, the thread of the screw-bolt will engage the internal thread of the rounded portion, passing over the lower end of the U shaped link, which is placed at an angle with the threaded bolt, so that the diminishing thread on said bolt will engage with the lower end of said link; and as said bolt is forced forward to its extreme limit, and the diminishing thread travels over said link, whereby the portion of the bolt engaging said link is constantly increasing in diameter, said link will be forced downward, drawing the platform with it until the same has been forced into its proper position in relation to the frame to which it is secured, the diminishing thread acting as a cam, to force the link and platform downward to their proper positions. I am thus enabled to place the platform in position and as readily remove the same, causing a saving in time, as well as material in comparison with the present method of securing and removing the platform, it being obvious that it is necessary frequently to remove the platform in order to repair and inspect the portions of the car supported beneath the same. The heads of the bolts 19,
pass within recesses 25, when the bolts have been screwed into position, said recesses being closed by pivoted plates 26.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination with the car-frame, of a removable platform supported thereon, links secured to the platform, and means for connecting said links to the car-frame, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a removable platform; of links secured thereto, and screwbolts for engaging said links for holding the platform in position; substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with a removable platform, of links pivoted thereto, and screwbolts engaging said links for holding the platform in position; substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
4:. The combination with a removable platform, of links pivoted thereto, and extending at an angle with said platform, and screw bolts for engaging said links; substantially as set forth.
5.v The combination with a removable platform; of cross-strips connected with said platform; U shaped links pivoted to said crossstrips, and screw bolts for engaging said links, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination with a removable platform of U shaped links; means for connecting said links to the platform, said links having upper horizontal portions and lower rounded portions and screw-bolts for engaging said rounded portions for holding the framein position; substantially as set forth.
7. The combination with a removable platform; of brackets secured beneath said platform having openings arranged with internal v threads; links connected with said platform, and screw-bolts engaging said brackets and set forth.
8. The combination of a removable platform; brackets having rounded portions secured beneath said platform, said brackets having internal threaded portions; links pivoted to said platform; screw-bolts working in said rounded portions, and engaging said links, certain threads on said bolts being made diminishing in form; substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
The combination of the car-frame, and a removable platform adapted to rest on said frame, with a suitable link on one of said parts, and a cam screw-bolt on the other part and adapted to engage the link and hold the platform in place, substantially as set forth.
10. The combination of a removable platform; links pivoted thereto; brackets secured beneath the platform and having rounded inv ternal screw-threaded portions, said brackets having openings 23, into which said links extend, and screw-bolts engaging in said brackets and links; substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
11. The combination of a removable platform; links pivoted thereto; brackets 14, having rounded portions 17, with openings 23, recesses 24, located beneath said openings a portion of said bracket having an internal screw thread, and a screw threaded bolt engaging in said bracket; substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
12. The combination with a removable platform; of links pivoted thereto, and screwbolts engaging said links, said screw-bolts being provided with diminishing threads in order to force said platform firmly into position; substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
