WHIP-HANGER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,999, dated June 6, 1893. Application filed March I5, 1893- Serial No. 466,071. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRISON WEED, of New Haven,in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Whip-Hangers; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-

My invention relates to an improvement in hangers for the suspension of carriage-whips, the object being to produce a device of superior simplicity and convenience.

WVith these ends in view, my invention consists in a whip-hanger having certain details of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

As herein shown, the device consists of a bracket A, constructed with holes a Ct, to receive screws or nails, by which it is put up, and furnished with three outwardly projecting parallel horizontal fingers B B B, alternated with the same numberof similarly arranged pins C C C, the said fingers being cast integral with the bracket, while the pins are made of wire, and applied thereto. The bracket has also formed integral with it, three guards D D D, which project above its upper face, and extend slightlyover the inner ends of the said pins. Of course, the number of fingers and pins may be varied as it is desired to increase or decrease the capacity of the device. Each pin has a fiat sheet-metal latch E, pivotally attached by its outer end to it, the inner end of the latchbeing adapted to engage with the upper edgeof the finger next adjacent to the pin on which it is hung. The outer edge of each latch is beveled, as at e, toward the finger with which it engages, while its outer end is notched or cut away, as at 6.

Under. this construction, the end of the whip when thrown against the beveled outer edge of any one of the latches, will lift the same. and enter its notch. Then if the whip is allowed to settle down, the latch will follow it, and grip and hold it in suspension. The guards D, before mentioned, are provided for preventing the latches from being lifted or thrown into positions from which they would not not return by gravity.

I would have it understood that-I do not limit myself to the particular construction herein shown and described, but hold myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations therein as fairly fall Within the spirit and scope of my invention.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a whip-hanger, the combination with a bracket adapted to be put up, and having alternating, outwardly projecting, parallel, horizontal fingers and pins; of latches suspended by their inner ends from the said pins, and resting at their outer ends upon the said fingers, and .each having its outer edge beveled, and its outer end cut away or notched, substantially as described.

2. In a whip-hanger, the combination with a bracket adapted to be put up, and having alternating, outwardly projecting, parallel, horizontal fingers and pins, and guards located above the latter; of latches suspended by their inner ends from the said pins, and resting at their outer ends upon the said fingers, and each having its outer edge beveled and its outer end cut away or notched, substantially as described.
