ally been supported by means of spikes se-' cured to a piece of iron sheeting shaped to conform with the outside of the core. It often happens however that the core support not being firmly supported by the sand `cannot support the pressure and weight of the iron or other metal and moves to one side carrying the core with it thus causing an unequal thickness in the walls of the casting. Other sources of annoyance are that the core supports which were cast in with the castingoften got loose or fell out, and that serious flaws consequently occured in the neighborhood of the chaplets.
The chaplets or core supports constructed according to this invention, are preferably formed of malleable iron or cast steel, and by their use I am enabled to overcome all the drawbacks and inconveniences before mentioned.
In order to render the description ot' my invention clearenl have hereto appended a sheet of drawings in which different forms of chaplets or core supports are illustrated, and reference to which ishereinafter made.
Figures l and 2 show respectively frontand side views of a chaplet or core support formed with a rib and disk; and Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate a form of 'support intended for use with heavy cores, this support being furnished with a rib and several pins.
The supporting part of the chaplet consists of the suitably shaped plate b and the pin a which` is cast with it.
For the purpose ot' stiffening the supporting plate b, a rib e may be cast upon it as shown in Figs. l and 2. A disk d is formed on the pin a for the purpose `of preventing the chaplet from becoming loose or falling out of the casting, and is especially applicable in making castings having thick walls.
The chaplet illustrated by Figs. 3 and 4, is designed especially for use with heavy cores. Under this arrangement the plate b having the rib e, is also provided with pins or studs c along the rib, and with several supporting pins a, thus insuring a firm grip in the sand. Owing to the supports being formed of malleable iron or cast steel they become burned into or welded so as to form part of the casting without causing any iaw.
What l claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A chaplet or core support comprising a stalk a, a head b, and a rib or projection formed upon the under side of the head b to one side of the stalk.
2.' A chaplet or core support comprising a stalk a, a head b provided on its under side with a rib or projection,andadisk d secured to the stalk at a distance from the head, said disk being materially larger than the stalk, substantially as shown and described.
