UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ZOHETH S. DUBFEE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CASTING INGOTS.
I, ZoHETH' S. DUEEEE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Making Long Shafts of Steel, and of Constructing and Arranging Ingot-Molds for Casting Ingots therefor, of
which the following is a specification:
My improvement consists in casting the ingots for long shafts in a bent form and then straightening them; and my purpose is, first, to avoid having the melted metal for the ingots fall through a very great height, and to be able to make a long shaft without having to draw it from an ingot of large diameter.
In the drawing, Figure 1 shows my molds partly in a vertical position and partly in ele-- vation; Fig, 2, a transverse section of the sprue molds and base through the connected molds; Fig. 3, a plan of the baseplate; and Figs. 4 and 5, cross-sections of the molds.
a is the sprue mold; b b, the connected molds c, the base; (1-, the base plug or center plate for taking the stream of metal; 0 e, the snugs or cars whereby the connected molds are held together; f f, the connecting bolts; h h, the eyes for handling the molds; g, the runner from the sprue to the connecting mold, which is here shown without lining, but may be made larger, and be lined with refractory material, if desired. The sprue molds and the'connected molds are separated somewhat by a projection, 13, on the sprue mold, partly to allow room for the connecting bolt, and partly to allow a play of air Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,310, dated January 2, 1872.
I between them and lessen the liability of their becoming too highly heated by the flowing metal. The operation of the molds will be clearly understood from'the drawing.
I make the bent ingot sufficiently large at the angle to allow cutting away all the sprue and a part of the metal adjacent thereto, so as to insure sound metal throughout the length 1. Making long shafts or other pieces of steel by first casting ingots in a bent form and then straightening and drawing and condensing said ingots, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. The arrangement and construction of ingot-molds for casting bent ingots, substantially as shown in the drawing herewith.
. ZOHETH S. DURFEE.
