Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. PHILLIPS,

second Alieutenant Twenty-second Infantry,

United States Army, a citizen of theUnited States, now stationed at Fort Keogh, in the county of Custer andjState ofMontana, have inventedoertain newand usefulInIprovements in Type-Writing Machines; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and

paper, used in writing or printing, while its exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to animprovement in typewriting machines, more especiallyadapt ed for the Hall typewriter, and it' has for its object to promote efficiency and facility of operation of the machine to aid particularly in correcting defective .printed or typewritten matter or making a subsequent impres# sion and to these ends the invention consists of the novel construction of certain parts substantially as hereinafter more fully described and pointed lout in the claims. v

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l, is a side view of a Hall typewritingmachiue, with the type-carriage elevated, embodying Inyimprovement. Fig. 2,is abroken plan View of the same, and Figs. 3, 4 and 5, are detailed views and a diagrammatic view thereof.

- In carrying out my invention, I employ a preferably V-shaped pointer or index A, having its apex or point adapted to rest upon the arms or. branches a c, at their divergent ends, areextended laterally, one as atl of, and the other as at c2, and rest in bearings or braekets b, b', carried by, and connected by screws or otherwise to,the upper end of the typecarriage'B, and depending below the same. The laterally extending portion a2, of the index or pointer A, is provided with a handle C, pivoted at ctso as to engage in the notch f, ofthe bracket b', and against the projection p, of same bracket and by actuating the handle C, the index or pointer can be manipulated so as to cause its point or apex to be raised from the paper and disposed against the under side of the type-carriage B, while said carriage is raised and the paper being taken out or other paper being put in. The bracket bf, is provided with a projection p, against which the side of the handle C,

engages when the type-carriage B, is raised to nearly a vertical position. As the `carriage is moved upward to rest, against the spacing rod, the projection p, raises thevhandle C, and consequently the pointer or index A, so that said pointeris automatically raised out of the way when thecarriageis raised to remove the paper or for any purpose, other than to see the work beingdone andv for corrections. The bracket b', is also provided with a notch f, in which the side of the handle'ilcan befastened so as to clamp the index to the under side of the carriage plate. This is done when the machine is not in use in order to prevent the index or pointer from being injured by hanging freely below the position the paper would hold it, if there were any paper in the typewriter. It will be also observed that, withthe handle C, of the index or pointerA, raised or brought intermediately of the type-carriage and the index supports as is the case when the index is disposed against the underside of the raised type-carriage the center of gravity ofthe index or pointer will be brought be hind said supports and thus automatically point upon Which'the latter VIoo b, move down andv consequently the index moves down to the point the letter is to be nextprinted it" the type-carriageis lowered. 'lo put the foregoing in another form, is to state that the index maybe raised'by the handle C, to such a point that the index by its own weight will rest against the bottom of the type carriage. The projection p of the bracket h, engages the handle C, as lthe type carriage is revolved about o, see Fig. 5, and raises. the index to 'such a height that it automatically falls against the under side ofthe type carriagean'd leans against it 'aslong as it (the type carriage) rests against the scale i shaft A(Fig. l). Now, while in this position, it

The index-pointer thus being clamped in position, the type-carriage is lowered and with it the pointer which will drop to the front, and rest upon the paper the handle C, leaving the notchf, and engaging by gravity the projection '19, of the bracket b. The point about which the index revolves,-

revolves in its turn about the same point as the type carriage and withit. And as-the type carriage is raised the index is lowered to *point to the place where a'letter would be printed it the carriage were lowered again.

Referring more especially to Fig. 5, in which the lines represent the different positionsA of the type carriage and the index as the car# riag'e is raised, the carriage and index, in this instancev being designated by the letters O B and a2, V, respectively: o a2 p P is the line drawn through the center 0, about which the entire type carriage revolves, and the center a2 about which the index revolves.` A2 19 is the projection 19 on the bracket b Fig. 4. ct2fis the projection f on the bracket b Fig. 4. This shows that in the position of a2 V in its highest po'- sitio'n the center of gravity of the index falls behind the point ot' support a2 and consequently A2 V will lean against 0 B2 in the position A2 V2. It can be clamped in this position by the handle C being pushed into the notch fof the bracket b. If the index is not 'clamped then as the carriage is lowered the 'center of gravity of A2V soon falls to the front of the point a2 and the index pointer then drops automatically to the front the point V resting on the paper. When O B is first raised to the position O B', CL2 goes up and just then p engages and thepoint V moves down toward B or the point where the letters are being printed. During the Working of the type writer the type carriage is raised only tothe position O B', which position puts the point V farthest down toward B.
