UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID H. GILLESPIE, OF LOOKLAND, OHIO.
BRlDLE-BIT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,644, dated May 30, 1893.
Application filed October 31. 1892. Serial No. 450,431- (No model.)
The object of my invention is to provide abridle bit by which a hard mouthed or vicious animal may be controlled and which will not The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a front view of a bridle bit embodying my invention, the Fig. 2 is a like view showing the rings in a horizontal plane.
A, A are the rein rings.
B is a central ring.
0 O are links connecting the rings with the central ring there being a pair of links on each side.
D D are loops taking over the central ring and between the pairs of links 0. I prefer to make all the connections loosely so that each part will be capable of movement rela- Duplicating the links makes it practically impossible for the animal to hold the bits firmly between the teeth against asawing action of the reins, and maintaining a space between the ends of two links composing a pair by one or more loops D or equivalent means makes it impossible for the animal to hold the bit fast. v
It will be noticed that in the construction described and shown the links, when there is I a strain upon the reins, normally assume a position parallel with each other in a plane at right angles to the mouth of the animal and .it is practically impossible for the animal to grasp themin such a way as to hold them fast as he might grasp and hold double barred bits in which the bars are parallel, when under strain, in a plane coincident with the mouth of the animal.
It is obvious that the loops D may be omitted and that the bit will still be effective though for a hard-mouthed animal I prefer to use the loops. I
I claim-- 1. The combination in a bridle bit of the rein rings A, the central ring B, and pairs of links 0 0 each pair connecting one of the rein rings A with the central ring B, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination in a bridle bit of the rein rings, a central ring, pairs of links connecting the rein rings and the central ring and one or more loops taking around the central ring between the connecting links, substantially and for the purpose specified' DAVID H. GILLESPIE.
