SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,638, dated May 30, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GUsTAF ENGLUND, of Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented a new and Improved Tool for Turning Pipes, Oar-Axles, &c., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved tool, more especially designed for use as a pipe wrench, or for turning car axles to move the cars on the track, the tool being very simple and durable in construction, and arranged to effectively grip the pipe, axle or other article.
The invention consists of a pair of pivoted jaws pivotally-connected with a handle and provided with slots to allow for the relative movement of the handle and the jaws.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter described and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of theimprovement. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same in a different position. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the same; and Figs. 4: and 5 are face views of the gripping jaws.
The improved tool is provided with the two jaws A and B, curved at their forward ends and serrated at their inner edges to securely grip the pipe, car axle or other article. The two jaws A and B are pivotally-connected with each other by a pivot O, and the rearward end of the jaw A is connected by a pivot D, with the head E of a handle E. This pivot is adapted to move in a longitudinal slot A. The rearward end of the other jaw B is considerably longer than the rearward end of the jaw A and is pivotally-connected by a pivot F, with the head E, somewhat in the rear of the pivot D, as plainly shown in the drawings.
In practice I prefer to make the rearward end of the jaw A forked or slotted, as plainly shown in Fig. 3, with the rearward end of the other jaw passing through the forked portion of the jaw A, the said jaw B being for this purpose provided with a segmental slot B, the center of which is in the pivot F and through which passes the pivot D. Now, when the pivot D is in the lower end of the slot 13, as illustrated in Fig. 1, the two jaws A and B are open to readily engage the pipe, car axle or other article. When it is desired to close the jaws, the operator presses the jaw B against the article and then moves the handle E downward in the direction of the arrow 0,, so that the pivot F forms the fulcrum for the handle E, thereby causing the forward end of the head E to swing upward, and as the said forward end carries the pivot D, the
closes the jaw A down upon the article to be clamped. Now, it will be seen that the harder the handle E is pressed downward, the firmer the jaws A and B Will grasp the article, and on further movement of the lever E in the direction indicated, the article grasped will be turned in the same direction. If the article grasped is a car axle, the latter is turned so as to start the car.
It is further understood that the tool can be used when it is desired to turn the article in an opposite direction, but in this case, however, the tool is turned so that the jaw B rests on the top of the article, and an upward pressure inthe inverse direction of the arrow at on the handle E will cause the handle to turn on the pivot F as a fulcrum, so that the pivotD in the front end of the head E swings downward to close the other jaw A from below.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A tool of the class described, comprising a pair of pivoted jaws crossing each other and provided with slots, a handle pivoted to the rear end of one jaw, and another pivot at the end of the handle adapted to move in the slots of the jaws, substantially as described.
2. A tool of the class described, comprising a pair of pivoted jaws provided the one with a segmental and the other with alongitudinal slot, and a handle having two pivots one to connect it with the rear end of one jaw, and the other adapted to move in the slots of the jaws, substantially as described.
3. A tool of the class described, comprising 5 latter moves in a like direction and therebya forked handle, two pivots held on the said handle and located one in front of the other, two jaws crossing each other and provided the one with a segmental and the other with a longitudinal slot, one of the pivots connecting the handle with the rear end of one of the jaws, the other pivot passing through, and being adapted to move in, the slots of the jaws,
and a third pivot to connect the jaws with each other, substantially as described.
