CAST-METAL MONUMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,506, dated May 30, 1893.

To all whoml it may concern.-

Beit known that I, JOHN MCNAUGHT CAM- ERON, a subject of Great Britain, residing at East Lake, in the county of Jeiferson and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cast-Metal Monuments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements, in cast iron, or other cast metal monuments for graves; and the object of my improvements are, first, to make a monument of the above described kind, of neat and pleasing design, that can be cheaply constructed, and will be easily handled, shipped and set up, a monument that can be finished to represent marble, or stone of any description, and will last for a long time exposed to the weather; second, to so construct a cast metal monument, that the name, or inscription will be inserted in such a manner, as to be easily removed for the purpose of changes, or additions, and that the inscription will be protected from the weather, by a plate of glass inserted in the inscription holder on the outside of the name. The base A, is made of cast iron, or other metal, and can be formed in any of the usual designs suitable for a monument. It is cast hollow as shown, and is left open on the bottom and is provided with a flange B, extending round the bottom edge, to hold itmore securely in the ground, or for the purpose of securing it to any desired material that may be placed under it, as a foundation On the upper side of the base, it is provided with any desired number of holes C. The said holes are for the purpose of securing the base tothe slab, as hereinafter described.

The slab D, is made of cast iron, or other metal, of any suitable design, or form as shown, but may be made as a shaft or column if so desired; on the front outer edge is formed a bead E, or any other suitable ornamental molding, extending round both sides and top,

and also having a plain liange F, on the back of the outer edge, on the opposite side from the bead or molding; the bottom of the slab is provided with a like Iiange G, G on both sides, the said flanges being provided with two, or more screw bolts H cast in, or in any other manner secured in the metal, the said bolts being for the purpose of securing the slabto the base as shown, the bolts holding the slab and base firmly together, by the aid of the nuts on the bottom of the bolts H, one of the said nuts I and bolt H,being shown in the sectional view; the said slab D, can be made without a base, the bottom extending down to rest in the ground as shown in Fig. 3 if so desired. The main slab or casting is formed open in the center as shown, the said opening having on its front edge, a fillet, or ornamental molding O, to form a frame to the opening. On the back of the said frame, is formed a rabbet I, extending round the opening, for the purpose of holding the inscription holder, the glass, and the inscription. to place.

The inscription holder K, is made of cast metal, with a recess formed on the face side,

-deep enough to hold the name plate L, and

the glass M, to cover it. The said inscription holder is provided with a series of lugs N, N, to secure it to the back of the slab D, by a series of screws as shown.

The patterns for the motto, or emblem P, are made separate from the pattern of the main slab D, and can be kept in a variety of designs, and emblems of various kinds. They are secured to the pattern temporarily before molding, and can be changed as often as desired; the base A, the main slab D, and the inscription holder K, are all cast in separate pieces; `lthe base and the slab D, are secured together by the bolts and nuts as shown; the inscription holder, when the name plate and glass are inserted, is secured to the back of the slab D, by screws as shown.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a monument,a1netal1ic slab D,hzwing a recess J formed in the back of the slab, the said recess extending round the edge of an aperture formed in the center of the slab, a metallic back K to Cover the aperture, having a projecting rim formed on its outer edge, a series of lugs N N formed on the outside of the projecting rim of the back, the rim formed l on the outer edge of the back, inserted in the recess J formed in the slab D, and means to secure the back to the slab, substantially as described.
