MACHINE FOR TRANSFERRING GLUE TO-PAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,502, dated May 30, 1893.
Application filed January 6, 1893- Serial No. 457.560- (No modelii To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST BECKER, acitizen of the United States, residing in New York same; and the invention consists of an apparatus for transferring glue to sheets of paper and other articles, which comprises a vessel for receiving the adhesive substance, a springactuated roller supported in removable bearings of saidvessel, a belt attached to said roller, and adapted to be drawn over a horizontal table, said belt being attached at one end to the roller and provided at the opposite end with a handle and aretaining device by which it can be attached to the outermost end of the table and a hinged cover for said vessel, which cover is provided with a regulating device so as to act in the nature of a doctor.
The invention consists further, in the construction and combination of parts and details, which will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, represents a plan-view of my improved apparatus for transferring glue to sheets of paper or other material. Fig. 2, is a vertical longitudinal section of the same on line 2, 2, Fig. 1, and Fig. 3, is a vertical transverse section on line 3, 3, Fig. 2, being drawn on a somewhat smaller scale.

Referring to the drawings A represents a receptacle or vessel for liquid I glue or other adhesive substances. The vessel A is preferably made of sheet metal and provided with a Water-bath B below the same so as to keep the glue or other adhesive material liquid during the use of the apparatus. The vessel A is preferably made of oblong shape and provided at both sides with journaled bearend is attached to the roller itself, so that Y When the roller is turned on its axisin one direction, the spring is set to tension, while when the roller is released, it is turnedby the spring in opposite direction and returned to its initial position. A belt D is attached to the surface of the roller, said belt being made of leather, thin sheet metal or other suitable material, the opposite free end of the belt or apron being provided with'a handle d and a hook-shaped retaining device d which engages the outermost end of a horizontal table E which is supported at one end by thevessel A containing the adhesive substance and at the opposite end by means of brackets, legs or other suitable supports F asshown clearly in Fig. 2. When the retaining device (1 is. released from the outermost end of the table E, the tension of the spring of the roller 0 winds the belt or apron around the roller until the handle at arrives at the hinged cover A of the vessel A, the handle d preventing the further drawing in of the apron into the vessel A. The hinged cover A'is provided with a curved arm a that is hinged to the outer end of the cover A" and threaded at its opposite end, the threaded end being engaged by a screw-nut a which by means of a groove is engaged by the forked end of the stay A so that when the screw-nut is turned in one direction, the cover is pressed with more or less pressure on the belt as the sameis drawn over the inner edge of the table E, while when the belt to the surface of the sheet.
paper, cloth, leather or other sheet to which the adhesive substance is to be transferred is placed on the apron and then removed from the same, by which operation a coating or film of adhesive substance is transferred from The end of the apron D is then released from the table, so that the tension of the roller draws in the belt and supplies a new coating of adhesive substance to the same. Then the apron is again stretched over the table, retained in position and the glue of the same transferred to the next sheet and so on. The water-bath s heated by a lamp or other source of heat, so that the adhesive substance is retained in liquid state in the vessel A. When all the glue has been transferred by the apron to the sheets to be pasted on the articles to be covered, a new supply of glue is placed into the receptacle A. This is accomplished by removing the nut a from the stay A and moving the cover on its hinged connectionin open position,so that access is thereby given to the interior of the vessel. When it is desired to clean the vessel, the roller is removed with its bearings from the vessel A, so that thereby the vessel, the roller and the belt can be readily cleaned and then replaced into the vessel A, whereupon the cover is returned to position and the operation of transferring the adhesive substance continued as before described. Any glue which is transferred by the surface of the roller 0 to the under side of the belt D is transferred to the inner edge of the table E at the time when the apron is moved over the table, so that but little glue adheres to the under side of the apron to interfere with the proper working of the apparatus.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a vessel for adhesive substances, of a spring roller journaled in said vessel, a belt or apron attached to said roller, said belt being provided with a handle and a retaining device at the outer end, a horizontal table extending partly over the vessel, a hinged cover for said vessel, and means for pressing the hinged cover with more or less pressure on the belt or apron so as to regulate the supply of adhesive substance to the surface of the apron, substantially as set forth.

The combination, with a vessel for adhesive substances, provided with removable journaled bearings, a spring roller supported in said bearings, a horizontal table extending partly over the vessel, a belt or apron attached to the roller, said belt being provided at the outer end with a suitable retaining device for engaging the outer end of the table, a hinged cover extending over the apron and means for regulating the pressure of the cover on said apron, substantially as set forth.
