PRESSURE-REGULATING VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,482, dated May 30, 1893.
Application filed May 17, 1892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN NAGELDINGER, a
- citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pressure-Regulating Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved device for regulating and reducing the pressure of gas, that is conducted from one reservoir to the other, the valve being mainly intended for use for reducing the pressure of carbonic acid gas, as the same is conducted from a high pressure reservoir to alow pressure receptacle; and the invention consists of a pressure reducing valve in which the gas is conducted by a pipe into a chamber formed of a cylindricall wall having a gas outlet and diaphragms attached to both ends of said cylinder, the diaphragm being provided with Ushaped blocks that are attached to the same, one block being connected with a flexible supply pipe, while the other block is provided in the face adjacent to the outlet opening of the pipe with a seat. Spring-actuated levers extend diametrically over the diaphragms and press on the same, so as to follow the motion of the diaphragms and permit the gas to pass into the valve-chamber and to the outlet of the same. The pressure of the gas in the chamber is regulated by a spring on the rod by which the levers are connected, so that the pressure can be adjusted, as required.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved pressure reducing valve, and Fig. 2 is a topview of the same.

-Referring to the drawings,A represents a cylindrical chamber which is connected by a pipe at with the reservoir from which the gas is supplied. The cylindrical chamber A is provided at both ends with diaphragms B made of steel or other suitable material, which are attached at their circumference to the walls of the chamber a, said diaphragms being preferably provided with concentric corrugations, so as to permit them to expand in outward direction. ranged in such a manner that the end of one block enters into the space between the other block and has certain play therein. One of the blocks D is connected by a flexible pipe E with the inlet opening of the supply pipe at, said flexible pipe being made of thin-steel or other suitable material. The pipe Ecommunicates with the channel in the inner end of one of the blocks D, said channelopening toward the space inclosed by the block and being provided with a projecting nipple e which forms with the corresponding recess 6 on the adjacent face of the other block D a Valve by which the supply of gas is regulated.
The chamber A is provided with an outlet pipe A through which the gas is conducted oft.
To the neck a for the inlet pipe at are applied at diametrically opposite points fixed arms f to which are pivoted levers E, which extend diametrically over the diaphragms and rest on the screws 0 by which the blocks D are attached to the diaphragms B. The outer ends of the levers F are bent inwardly and provided with lugs f through which is passed a connecting rod F that is provided with a head at one end and with a screw thread at the opposite end.
A helical spring is interposed between the head of the rod F and the lug) ofone lever, while a screw nut f is screwed on the threaded end of the rod, said screw serving for adjusting the tension of the spring. The spring serves for regulating the pressure to which the gas delivered to the chamber A is reduced. As the gas passes at high pressure through the flexible pipe E and through the nipple 6 into the chamber A, it fills the chamber and exerts an expansive action on the diaphragms whereby the nipple at one end and its seat at the other end of the blocks D D are moved toward each other, and the check is automatical when contact between the same is formed. As soon as the pressure is reduced by the outflow of gas, the nipple and its seat are immediately separated from each other by the joint action of the two diaphragms, so that an instant supply of gas is furnished. Owing to the arrangement of two diaphragms, one at each end of the chamber A, a very sensitive action of the valve is obtained, owing to the fact that both the supply channel for the gas and the valve seat for the same are movable at the same time, whereby my improved pressure reducing valve is adapted in a high degree for reducing the pressure of carbonic acid and similar gases.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim. as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A pressure valve, composed of a chamber having diaphragms at both ends, a gas outlet a block attached to each diaphragm one ble pipe connecting said channel with the inlet opening of the supply pipe, and a seat arranged in the adjacent face of the other block, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, in a gas-pressure regulating valve, of a chamber provided with flexible diaphragms at both ends, U -shaped blocks attached to said diaphragms, the innor end of one block being provided with a channel a flexible pipe connecting said channel With the supply-opening of the chamber, a valve seat arranged at the inner end of the other block adjacent to the supply channel of the first block, an outlet pipe for said chamber, pivoted levers extending diametrically across the diaphragms and being connected by a screw-rod and a pressure regulating spring on said rod, substantially as set forth.
