CIRCULATING TUBULAR BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,441, dated May 30, 1893. Application filed January 30, 1892. Serial No. 419,793. (No model.)
To all whom it mcty concern;
Be it known that I, EDWIN L. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tulare, county of Tulare, State of California,
have invented a new and useful Improvement super-heater into the boiler near the top thereof, and from the lower part of the boiler be returned to the super-heater. I attain this object by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure l is a plan of the under side. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section and Fig. 4 is a cross section along the lines 1l of Fig. 3.

A represents a locomotive boiler provided with a series of tubes B. passing longitudinally through it, one end of said boiler connected with the smoke stack C, its opposite end provided with a fire box D. The sides and ends of said fire box are composed of a double thickness of sheet iron or other suitable material, separated from each other. The rear end of said fire box is provided with an opening E for the purpose of supplying fuel.
Within the fire box D, I place a superheater F constructed of sheet iron or other suitable material, provided with a series of tubes G, said tubes G extending from the lower toward the upper portion of the super-heater F, when said super-heater is placed in position in the fire box D. The super-heater F is secured to the walls of the fire box D in any suitable manner, and has its end farthest from the opening E in the fire box D slightly lower than its opposite end.
To the exterior surface of the boiler A above the fire box D,I secure the pipe II, which extends from near the rear of the fire box toward the smoke stack of the boiler andis bent downward at h a short distance in front of the forward end of the fire box and then at i bent again and extending toward the fire box and communicatingby means of the coupling I with the super-heater. Near the end of the pipe H, at the forward portion of the fire box, I place an injector J forcing the water from the tank which enters into the in j ectorthrough the pipe K, into the super-heater F. A short distance forward from the injector J, I place a check valve L, which check valve is where the injector works against the boiler pressure. By this means, the cold water from the tank is conducted directly into the super-heater Without passing into the boiler;
Immediately in front of the boiler A, I place a super-heater 2 similar to the one in the fire box D and connect the pipe M'with superheater 2, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2; the pipe M extending along the side of the boiler a short distance, then bent downwardly and then bent again extending in a course parallel to the first toward the fire box and is connected by a coupling m to the super-heater F.
. The super-heater 2 is connected with the boiler A by means of the pipe 3 near the top thereof.
In the bottom of the boiler, I place the pipe N connected with the filter 0, said filter connected by a pipe P to the super-heater F near the bottom thereof.
Q represents an ordinary mud drum. The pipes H andM are similarly arranged on each side of the boiler. By my arrangement, the Water is introduced into the super-heater by means of the pipes H H and when the pressure in the heater exceeds that of the boiler, the small quantity of water in the heater will be expelled therefrom and enter through the pipes M M the supenheater 2 and thence en- I ter the boiler near the top through the pipes 3 3 on each side of the boiler and simultaneously the water in the boiler will pass through the pipe N at the bottom of the boiler through the filter and into the super-heater F. This will occur very frequently, almost continuously, causingacomplete circulation from the super-heaters F and 2 into the top of the boiler and from the bottom of the boiler into the super heater, the boiler never becoming chilled by the introduction of cold water into it, since the water from the tank is brought directly into the super-heater.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is y In a locomotive boiler, the combination of a super-heater placed within the fire box, a pipe communicating therewith, said pipe connected with the cold water reservoir, an injector attached to said pipe, with a superheater placed immediately in front of the boiler, apipe connecting the super-heater in the fire box with a super-heater in front of the boiler, a pipe communicating with the boiler near the top thereof andconnected with said super-heater in front of the boiler, a filter placed beneaththe boiler, a pipe connecting said boiler with said filter, a pipe connecting said filter with the supervheater in the tire box, substantially as described and for the purpose set: forth.
