STOVEPIPE ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,310, dated May 30, 1893.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK SCHMIDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baraboo, in the county of Sauk and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Stovepipe Attachments; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable oth ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in that class of devices which are attached to the smoke pipe of a heating stove for utilizing the smoke and particles of combustion for further heating a room or apartment after they have been let into the smoke pipe for nal discharge into the chimney or stack, and among other things the invention has ,for its object to provide a construction which will be no disligurement to a room in which it is placed, and which may be cheaply made so as toget the greatest possible heating surface out of a cert-ain amount of material, and may be attached to and removed from a smoke pipe such as atpresent in use.
Other objects and advantages will appear from the following description and claims when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l, is a front elevation of my improved attachment connected to a stove and stove pipe. Fig. 2, is a side elevation of the same with parts in section, and Fig. 3, is a detail section illustrating a modified construction.
Referring by letter to said drawings, and more particularly to Figs. 1, and 2,thereof:- A, indicates a heating stove, which may be of any approved construction, and B, indicates my improved attachment which is provided with a vertical pipe section O, designed to engage the collar flange a, of the stove, as illus- ,trated This pipe section O, is provided at an intermediate point in its length wit-h a damper c, for a purpose presently described, and it is connected by a sleeve or union d, with an ordinary stove pipe b, as illustrated.
The pipe section O, and the sleeve or union d, form parts of my improved attachment, and through the medium of the same the attachment may be quickly and conveniently connected to a stove and stove pipe without the employment of skilled labor, which is au important desideratum.
My improved attachment B, comprises in addition to the pipe section O, and the sleeve or union d, just described, the vertical or approximately vertical pipe sections c, which lead from the sleeve d, to a point adjacent to the .iioor upon which the stove stands, the short vertical sections f, which are connected by elbows or the like, with the sections e, the short vertical sections g, connected with the sections f, the sections h, which are connected with the lower ends of the sections g, and are pitched in the direction of the stove, and the lateral sections i', which are connected with the sections h, and are let into the section C, below the damper c, as shown. By this construction it will be readily perceived that when the damper c, of the pipe B, is closed, the smoke and particles of combustion will take from the pipe O, through the sections e, f, g, h, and i, of my improved attachment, and the heat of the same will be radiated into the room before they are allowed to escape up the pipe B.
By reason of the sections of my improved attachment, being arranged in the circuitous manner described, it will be seen that a very large radiating surface is afforded, and that the heat will be entirely removed from the smoke and particles of combustion before the same are permitted to escape up the pipe B, and the chimney. Thus the liability of any sparks escaping from the stove into the chimney and setting fire to the same, is oloviated.
In order to facilitate the removal of soot and other sediment from my improved attachment, I provide the several elbows which connect the sections e, f, g, and h, with openings in theirunder sides. These openings are preferably surrounded by flanges, and they are normally closed by caps D, which may be readily removed when it is desired to clean the attachment. Thus the attachment may be kept free from soot and other sediment which tend to retard the draft.
In the practice of my invention, I prefer when a tire is first started in the stove, to open the damper c, so as to secure'a strong draft, but when the fire has gained headway, the damper is closed so as to conduct the smoke ICO and particles of combustion through my improved attachment for the purpose described.
In Fig. 3, of the drawings,ll1ave illustrated a modified construction of union d', which I prefer to use in some cases instead of the union d, before described. This union CZ', whichalso servesas a drum, is provided in its bottom with two openings fr, which are su rrounded by flanges for the engagement of the pipe sections C, e, as shown; and the said union is also provided at its upper end which is reduced in diameter as shown, with a ange to receive the pipe or uptake b.
The use of the union and drum d', is preferable when a very high heat is desired, as it has a very large radiating surface, and therefore serves to remove any heat from the smoke and particles that may remain in the same after they have passed through the pipe sections e, f, g, 71, and i.
It will be seen from the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings that my improved attachment is exceedingly cheap and simple; that it may be readily con nected to any ordinary stove and stove pipe by a novice and that by its use a saving of fuel may be eected, inasmuch as all of the heat from the tire is thrown into the room instead of'going np the chimney.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination with a stove and a stove pipe b of theradiatingattaclim ent comprising the pipe section C, connected to the stove and provided with a damper, the union connecting the pipe section C, and the pipe b, the pipe sections e, connected to the union, the pipe sections t', let into the section C, at a point below the damper, the pipe sections f, g, and h, joints or elbows connecting the lower ends of the sections f, to the sections c, and the lower ends of the sections g, to the sections h, and having flanged openings for the discharge of soot and the like, and caps normally closing the said openings of the joints or caps, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with astove and a stove pipe b, ot' the radiating attachment comprising the pipe section C, connected to the stove and provided with a damper, the union and drinn connecting the pipe section C, and the pipe Z), and having apertures in its bottom, surrounded by flanges for the engagement of the pipe sections C, and e, and also having its up per end reduced to receive the pipe b, the said pipe sections e, the pipe sections i, let into the section C, at a point below the damper and the pipe sections f, g, and h, connected together and to the sections e, and t', and arranged in a circuitous manner between said sections, all substantially as specilied.
