  • This invention relates more particularly to fastenings for burial-'caskets which are employed for securing the cover to the body# portion, also the head-panel to the cover. It is also applicable to be used as afastening 1n many articles of furniture, such as toy-furniture, toilet-cases, boxes and the like, or in any place where a cover or lid is desired to be fastened to another or body-portion, or where two parts are to be detachably connected. As a new article of manufacture, it may be cheaply made by cutting or stamping, with the use of dies and suitable machinery, from sheet-metal of the desired thickness and quality, and of any desired size, and may be neatly finished by nickel-plating, enameling, &c., as desired.

mazoo, county of Kalamazoo, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenings for Burial- Y Gaskets; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains' to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates more particularly to fastenings for burial-'caskets which are employed for securing the cover to the body# portion, also the head-panel to the cover. It is also applicable to be used as afastening 1n many articles of furniture, such as toy-furniture, toilet-cases, boxes and the like, or in any place where a cover or lid is desired to be fastened to another or body-portion, or where two parts are to be detachably connected. As a new article of manufacture, it may be cheaply made by cutting or stamping, with the use of dies and suitable machinery, from sheet-metal of the desired thickness and quality, and of any desired size, and may be neatly finished by nickel-plating, enameling, &c., as desired.
This invention is more particularly described and pointed out in the following speciication and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a broken.- portion of the cover and one of the side-walls of' the body-portion of aburial-casket in crosssection, with a portion of the cover broken away, showing my improved catch orlfastening in its locked position. vstantially a circular-shaped disk or plate having al reduced and elongated portionektending therefrom which is bent in approximately a right-angle to the plane of the disk and given a quarter-twist which forms the handle u, with which said fastening is operated. The disk portion of said fastening is provided with a pivotal center aperture i', located near one edge eccentric to the concentric-center of said disk, through which screw i is passed and inserted in cover B, and is the pivotal center around which the other parts move or rotate in the act of locking and unlocking. Said disk is also provided with the outer circular aperture orslot s, lo-
cated near the opposite edge of said disk from I and concentric to aperture i', through which is passed screw n which is also inserted in cover B. The object of slot s is to limit the rotating movement of said fastening as well- (as to provide a means for securing the same to the cover, which is effectually done by means of the screws n z' as shown in Figs. 1 and 4. Said disk is also provided with the innerl circular aperture or slot o, located between slot s and aperture concentric thereto and terminating at one end with the enlarged portion t, said enlarged-portion being for the purpose of allowing the head ofscrew 1' to pass through said disk, said screwl being inserted in the side-wall A, as shown in Fig. 4. It will be apparent that the shapeof disk or plate C may be modified quite indefinitely without detracting from the practical utility or4 the essential features of the invention, which are that the slots s and v t be concentric to the pivotal center aperture 2"; also the position and shape ofhandle @may be moditied as convenience or necessity may indicate. It will also be apparent that slot s might be dispensed with, as other means could be employed to limit the rotating movement of said disk or fastening, but the practical utility and efficiency of the invention would be greatly enhanced by such a construction for the reason that said slot in addition to limiting the rotating movement of said fastening, affords an additional means for securing the fastening to the cover.
In Fig. 1 the fastening is shown in its locked position. To unlock it, the handler!J is pressed to the right until the opposite end of IOO slot s engages screw fn, when the enlarged portion t of slot v will register with the head of screw r, at which place cover B maybe raised. To lock it, press the cover down until the head of screw r passes through the enlarged portion t of slot fu, then by means of the handle u, turn fastening to left until slot fu en'- gages screw fr, where the head of said screw projects over the fastening each side of the slot and holds the cover firmly in position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4.
To prevent anylateral displacement of cover B, a small tube or eyelet D corresponding to the size of the head of screw fr is inserted in said cover and registers with the he'ad of said screw when locked in position, as shown in Figs. 1 and et.
Depressions w 1U conforming to the size and shape of the heads of screws m'are made r kets, the combination with acover and bodygportion, of a plate or disk having a reduced and elongated portion extending therefrom forming a handle, said plate or disk having in the side-wall A to admit the heads of said screws, as shown in Fig.` 4.
Referring to Fig. 4f, e and e indicate, re spectively, the cloth covering of the body and cover of the casket.
It will be apparent that this fastening is particularly adapted for use on this class of caskets, in that it may be made of thin material, it may be attached to the cloth covered surface of the cover without any cutting or tting and will work between the covered surfaces of the cover and body, the nap of the cloth naturally being depressed where the fastening works, while each side it will stand up and fill the small aperture between `the body and cover caused by the insertion of the fastening.
When used oncaskets that are not covered, and it is desired to have the cover fit closely to the body, aportion corresponding to the size and thickness of the fastening should be removed, either from the side-wall A or cover B.
This fastening may be used in an inverted position, as well as in the position shown, and
in applying it to head-panels it is usually inverted. Y
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, the herein described catch or fastening, comprisingr substantially a circular shaped disk or plate, having a reduced and elongated portion extending therefromand bent approximately at a right angle to the plane of said disk or plate and given a quarter twist to form a handle, said disk or plate being provided with a pivotal-center aperture, eccentric to the geometrical center of said disk or plate, an outer circular slot concentric to said pivotal center, an inner circular slot, one end terminating with the enlarged portion, concentric to and between said pivotal center aperture `and the outer circular slot, substantially as lshown and set forth.
2. In a catch or fastening for burial casa pivotal center aperture, an outer circular slot, and an inner circular slot, terminating iat one end with the enlarged portion, said slots being concentric to said pivotal center aperture, of the screw t' inserted through the pivotal center aperture and screw n inserted through the outer circular slot, whereby said fastening is secured to said cover, of screw r inserted in the side-wall of said body portion, its head being adapted to register with, and pass through the enlarged portion of the inner circular slot in the act of unlocking or locking, of the tube or eyelet inserted in said cover and adapted to register with and engage the head of screw r, to prevent lateral displacement of said cover, `substantially as shown and set forth.
