MUSICAL BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,278, dated May 30, 1893.
Application filed November 28,1892. Serial No. 463,349. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSKAR PAUL Loon- MANN, a subject of the King of Saxony, and a resident of the city of Leipsic-Gohlis, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Musical Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in musical boxes provided with interchangeable note disks or sheets.
The object of the invention is, first, to drive the note disk, not direct from the driving mechanism as hitherto, but through an intermediate organ; secondly, to suppress the disturbing noise caused by the passage of the note disk over the playing mechanism; and thirdly, to render the driving mechanism removable from the box and interchangeable with other driving mechanisms so thatit may at any time be removed from and replaced in the box or changed for another driving mechanism. I attain this object by the means shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a top view of an open musical box and Fig. 2 a part section of the same through line a-b of Fig. 1.
A is a disk laid on and covering note disk B. At its circumference it is provided with holes or teeth in which driving wheel R of driving mechanism T engages. Disk A is held and carried on the same spindle as the note disk by means of stud C so that when the former is set in rotation by driving wheel R from driving mechanism T the latter is carried with it. By disk A acting as driver of note disk B, the disadvantage of having, as hitherto, to provide each note disk separately with teeth or holes or their equivalent for engagement with the driving mechanism, is removed, as according to this invention only the single disk A has to be so provided. 13y reason of disk A being of such a form and so laid upon the note disk as to cover it, the suppression is effected of the disturbing noise that accompanies the movement of the note disk over the playing mechanism, that for example which is caused by the pins entering the slots of the note disk or sheet, a perfectly clear tone being the result of my construction.
The driving mechanism T is located in a casing G fixed in such a position on one of the inner sides of the musical box that in taking out the driving mechanism after removal of disks A andB no other parts are disturbed. The casing G may be fixed by screws or preferably may be slid into and held in a frame F, as shown in the drawings. \Vhen, as frequently happens, it is necessary to repair the driving mechanism, this may be easily removed from the musical box by sliding out the casing G containing it and with like easo be replaced, or when the repairs require a length of time another driving mechanism may be introduced in its place, so that there need be no interruption in the use of the instrument.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In musical boxes a second disk A laid upon the note disk so as to cover the same, both disks being held in position by stud C, said disk A being driven by engagement at its circumference with the driving mechanism, for the purpose specified substantially as described and shown.
2. In musical boxes a driving mechanism T which is carried in a frame fixed to one of the sides of the musical box so as to be readily romovable, for the purpose specified substantially as described and shown. I
