Description

. v v--v-A UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
IMPROVEMENT IN HOD-ELEVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,805, dated September 5, 1865.
To alt whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, WILLIAM H. TOTTEN, of Academia, Junia ta county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Bod-Elevator for Building Purposes; and I do hereby declare the following is a i'ull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in attaching to a hoisting-rope a frame or cage of such a convenient shape that the hod. when titled with bricks or mortar, may be easily placed in or removed from it.
Figure lis an elevation showing the hod being hoisted. Fig. 2 is an end View of hod in the elevator. Fig. 4; is a plan of bottom brace oi' elevator. Fig. 3 is a side view of elevator.
Similar letters in each iigure refer to the same parts.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A is a pulley, liXed to some convenient part ofthe building or scaffolding.
B is the hoisting-rope, which is operated by a horse or Windlass, as circumstances may require.
U is the elevator, suspended to the rope B.
The bands c c are of wrought-iron, connected by the wooden cross-bars c', upon which the hod rests.
The bottom cross-bar, c, is ofiron and slotted at one end, c", to receive the bod-handle, as shown in plan, Fig. 4.
The eye E, to which the rope is attached, is so placed on the elevator that When the hod is being hoisted it has a slight inclination backward, to prevent the bricks or mortar falling out, as shown in Fig. l.
The mode ot' the operation is this: The elevator is lowered to the ground, the hod, filled with bricksormortar, inserted. Itistheu hoisted to the top of the building and removed from the elevator, thus saving a great amount ot' labor.
The elevator is of such a shape that the hod is inserted and removed with great facility.
Whatl claim as my invention7 and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Hoisting a hod by means of a movable elevator, C, constructed and operating substan tially as described.
W. H. TOTTEN.
