SIMON I-I. S'FUPAKOFF, OF PITTSBURG, ASSIGNOR 'lO THE UNION SVVITCII AND SIGNAL COMPANY, OF SIVISSVALE, PENNSYLVANIA.
BINDING-POST FUSE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 497,732, dated May 16, 1893.
Application filed September 5. 1392. Serial No. 445.083. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.' ring 10, with the conductors 1 and 12 have Be it known that I, SIMON H. STUPAKOFF, a electrical connection respectively, and are citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsconnected by a wire or strip of easily fusible burg, in the county of Allegheny and State of metal, which is pressed into grooves 14 formed 55 Pennsylvania, have invented or discovered in the portion 3 and ring 10. These grooves certain new and useful Improvements in Bind` are preferably made irregular as regards their ing-Posts, of which improvements the followlongitudinal shape, and it is also preferred to ing is a specification. groove the fiange 9 connect-ing the grooves in The invention described herein relates to the portion 3 and the block or ring so that the 6o to certain improvements in binding posts, and fusible strip may lie wholly within the surhas for its object a construction wherein is face of the binding post. rlhe fusible strip incorporated a fusible conductor connecting is made slightly larger than the grooves so insulated portions of the post, the several that it will be necessary to compress it someparts ofthe device beiugso arranged and comwhat in forcing it into the grooves, thereby 65 I5 bined as to render the presence of the coninsuring good electrical contact and preventductor necessary for the passage of a current. ing its accidental displacement.
In general terms the invention consists in In the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 1I, the construction and combination substanthe insulating sleeve is externally threaded tially as hereinafter more fully described and so as to screw into a threaded socket in the 7o zo claimed. portion 3, and is internally threaded for the In the accompanying drawings forming a reception of a threaded pin on one side of part of this specification, Figure 1 is a view the block 10, which in this construction is in sideA elevation of my improved binding made solid in lieu of annular or ring shape, post. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the as in the construction shown in Fig. 2. The 75 same. Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 1 of a stem 5 is connected with the block 10, and is modified form of the post, and Fig. t isa secinsulated from the support 7 by a sleeve 1G tional elevation thereof. which is preferably formed integral with the In the practice of my invention, the end of washer 1l. In this form of binding post the one of the conductors 1 to be united by the conductor 12 is bent around the stem 5 be- 8o 3o bindingpostis clampedinthe transverse opentween the metal washer 13 and the insulating ing 2 of the upper cylindrical portion 3 by the washer 17. The portions3 and 10 of the bindscrew 4. The portion 3, which is formed of ing post are electrically connected by a fusimetal, is provided with a stem 5 threaded at ble strip 18 in the same manner as hereinbeits lower end for the reception of a nut t5 fore described. In lieu of arrangingthe fusi- 85 whereby the post is to the support 7. On the ble strip in grooves, the ends thereof may be stem is slipped a sleeve S provided with a wound around screws entering the parts 3 flange 9, the sleeve and flange being formed and 10 as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, of insulating material, and onto the sleeve is or electrical connection between said parts by slipped a metal annular block or ring' 10, the means of a fusible strip may be made in any 9o 4o sleeve and flange insulating the ring l0 from other suitable manner.

It is preferred to In order to preventadisengagement of the interpose a washer 11 of insulating material parts, it is preferred to lock the sleeve S to between the ring 10 and the support 7. The the part 3 by a pin 19 driven through the end of theother conductor 12 is bent around [lange 9 and into the part 3. The block 10 is 95 the sleeve S between the ring 10 and washer similarly locked to the sleeve S by a piu 20.

The cylindrical portion 3 and metal block or constant protection is afforded. As the fusible strip is in plain view, an operator can see at a glance whether the break in the circuit is due to the destruction of the fusible strip or not, audit1 so, can readilyremedy the fault.
I claim herein as my invention- 1. A binding posthaving in combination two metal parts, one of said parts being provided with suitable means for securing the post to a suitable support, insulating material interposed between the metal parts, means for connecting the ends of conductors to the metal parts, and an external strip of fusible metal electrically connecting the metal parts, whereby the strip may be applied without disturbingI any of the other parts of the post, substantially as set forth.
2. A binding post having in combination two metal parts having` grooves formed in their outer walls, one of said parts being provided \vith means for securing the post to a suitable support, insulating material interposed between the metal parts and a strip ot fusible metal frictionally held in said grooves and forming au electrical con nection between the metal parts, substantially as set forth.
3. A binding post7 having` in combination a metal part provided with means for connecting a conductor thereto, a metal block provided with means for securing it toasuitable support and adapted to be connected to another conductor, insulating material interposed between the metal parts, and a strip of fusible metal frictionally held in grooves formed in the outer walls of the metal parts, and electrically connecting said parts, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
