Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,766, dated September 5, 1865.

.The present invention consists in combining in one and the same piece of furnitiu a bureau and commode, the commode being so arranged with regard to the bureau as to be moved out and in of the saine,according as it is desired to use it, the commode, when not in use, being wholly incased within the bureau.

In the accompanying plate of drawings my combined bureau and commode is illustrated, Figure 1 being a front View of the same, showing the commode incased; Fig. 2,'a top view with the commode drawn out; Fig. 3, a transverse vertical section taken in the planeof the. line mm, Fig. 2. y

a a inthe drawings represent a bureau, which may be made of any kind of wood usually employed for such articles, and of such finish and style as may be deemed most desirable, in the upper portion, 12, of which bureau are two drawers,'c 0, arranged and constructed in the ordinary manner, for the reception of articles of clothing, &c. y

In the lower portion of the bureau a, and at one side ot the same, a commode, d, is placed so as to be moved or slid in and out of the same, the front portion of the commode being sustained or supported-upon a roller, f, in the center or at each corner, and the rear portion upon the bottom. frame-work of the bureau or by side cleats, g, moving in grooves h of the bureau-frame. The top portion of the commode is provided with a bowl, I, for washing purposes, and in the lower portion, 922, which may be made with a drawer, n, or in the four thus entirely incased, onboxed, as it were.

The advantages of suehan arrangement of acommode andbureau afegrnany, among which may be mentioned its convenience and especial adaptation for small apartments, and, furthermore, it enables a room used both as a recep tion-room orparlor and a chamber to be easily relieved without inconvenienceot an indispensable chamber appendage, but entirely'inappropriate in appearance for a parlor.

Upon the opposite portion of the bureau to that in which the commode is placed drawers may be arranged; but I deem it quite desiring-stand therein, in a substantially similar manner to that described for the commode, which stand can be also m'oved'outand in, and is intended for use asa bidet, so called. This stand can be provided with drawers in its lower portion or made with a closet, as may bedeemed most desirable.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent v -A combined bureau and commode, either with or without a bidet, made substantially as herein described, for the purposes specified.
