` To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SIMON GRossMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Castle,in the county of Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom `Olasps or Clamps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. j

My invention relates to improvements in broom clasps or clamps, and the object of my invention is the provision of a device of the most simple, cheap and durable construction which will effectively clamp the broom straw and make'a broom which will withstand the hard usage to which it is subjected and be entirely practical.

' To attain 'the desired objects the invention consists of a broom clamp or holder embodying a novel construction and combination of parts for service as will be understood from the following description and drawings, in which- Figure l is an elevation of my device 4applied to a broom. Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the clamp or holder detached to fully show details.

My improved clamp, clasp or holder con sists of the jawsAhaving the inward extending barbs B, the reduced shanks C, having the lugs D fitting and pivoted together, the cross-piece or bar E, and the screw F having an eye G to receive the cross-bar said cross bar having the downward extending securing ears E', all as clearly shown.

In applying my device I take the broom straw H which forms the body of the broom and the steif or handle .I and place the crossbar E at the bend in the straw or in other words confine the straw with the cross bar and the outward tapering or broom portion passesthrough thejaws. Nowbyscrewingthe screw into the upper end of the staff or handle the jaws are caused to press or bind firmly against the straw and the barbs operate to hold the straw in proper position to make the broom even at all points to present a perfect sweeping surface, and it is evident that the straw or broom can always be retained in Iirm condition by screwing the screw into the staff which action by reason of the shanks engaging thetapered upper end of .the staff causes the jaws to bind .firmly and securely against the broom. When the broom has become entirely worn out or rendered worthless the clamp can be removed entirely by taking out the screw which releases the jaws and the entire device can be removed. y

It will be seen that the barbs or lugs on the jaws are arranged alternately1 with reference to each jaw in order that they will engage at the proper places on the straw to render the broom the proper size. It will also be seen that the clamp can be used as often as desired and will not wear out and being simple and inexpensive is thus rendered .entirely practical.

I claim as my invention- A detachable broom clamp, consisting of the two T shaped sections pivoted together, the upper portions or jaws engaging the broom straw and the lower portions or shanks bearing against the staif or handle, and a cross piece and screw operating to force the jaws inward, for the purpose described.
