SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 497,410,11ated May 16, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JEROME B. MCCLURE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at SedaIia, in the county of 'Pettis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawlngs.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in fences, and it consists in the employment of one or more Wire cables attached to posts set in the ground at long intervals. To these cables a series of independently constructed panels is applied resting upon the ground, which may remain as a permanent fence or may be readily removed from the cables and rendered portable.

The manner of constructing the panels which are readily applied to and held in a vertical position by the cables is the leading novel feature of my invention as will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification in which like letters of reference refer to like parts, in which drawings' Figure 1, is a view in side elevation of my improved fence showing the panels applied to and held in an upright position by horizontal Wire cables supported at the upper parts of the fence posts. Fig. 2, is a side View of same showing how the panels may be applied to and held in an upright position by two horizontal cables, one of which is located at the tops of the panels and the other cable at the lower parts of the panels. Fig. 3 is an end or cross sectional view showing how the panels are constructed.

In the drawings A represents the cables which may be formed of large single wires or by twisting two or more smaller wires together and are attached to and stretched between fixed posts B B set in the ground.

opposite sides of the slats D will leave an open ended space F between the inner side surfaces of that part of the ends of battens E projecting above and below the boards or slats D. The panels being thus completed are then placed in position receiving the cables which pass loosely into the spaces F holding said panels in an upright position'as before mentioned and shown in drawings, with the lower ends of the panels or battens E resting upon the ground.

For the purpose of connecting the ends of the panels each one with the other and thereby stiffeningthe lower part'of the fence, and preventing the panels from any liability of getting displaced, I preferably provide a connecting bar H which is inserted into the space between the slats D and the two upright battens E. E. of each adjacent panel as shown.

Any suitable device may be used for stretching the cables to a proper tension upon the posts.

I found in my experiments that the cable could be successfully stretched between fixed posts placed one fourth of a mile apart and only required the intermediate posts B (which support the cables) placedat long intervals of one hundred feet or more apart, this in connection with my independently constructed panels being one of the important features of my fence by which means its cost of production is greatly reduced over other styles of fence heretofore used.

A fence having its panels constructed as shown in drawings and applied to the cables is sufficiently effective in turning hogs, sheep and all kinds of stock by making the parts sufficiently strong for the purpose intended. It is therefore obvious that the panels 0 not being attached to the cables but loosely applied thereto do not bear any weight upon the cables, but receive their vertical support entirely by resting upon the ground while the cables do furnish lateral support for the panels holding them in an upright position. The cables being thus relieved from weight of the panels are free from any liability to swag between the posts. By this novel construction and combination of parts as herein described I am enabled to place the intermediate posts at long intervals of from one hundred or two hundred feet apart according to the level or undulating surface of the ground, these intermediate posts not being connected with the panels but only furnishing support for the suspended cables.

I am aware of Patent No. 4&8,545 and Patent No. 385,466 and I do not claim a fence constructed as shown in either one of said patents.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to Secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The within described portable fence e1nbracing one or more horizontal wire cables stretched between fixed posts having a series of panels 0 applied to said cable or cables, said panels constructed of horizontal boards or slats D having upright bars or battens E nailed or bolted to opposite sides of slats D forming spaces F between the ends of said battens adapted to receive the cable or cables which pass into said spaces said cable or cables holding the panels in an upright position while the panels receive vertical support by their weight resting upon the ground all in combination, substantially as specified.

2. The Within described portable fence consisting of one or more horizontal cable wires supported by posts located at long intervals apart as described, in combination with a series of independently constructed panels 0 embracing horizontal boards or slats D having upright bars or battens E, nailed or bolted to the sides of horizontal boards or slats D,said panels 0 capable of being detachably applied to and held in an upright position by said cable or cables and provided with suitable means for connecting the ends of adjacent panels 0 each one with the other substantially as specifled.
