FURNACE WITH AIR, STEAM, AND HYDROCARBON FUEL FEEDING ATTACHMENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 497,194, dated May 9, 1893. Application liled December 24, 1892. Serial No. 456.261. (N0 model-l V.To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention consists in a combination with a boiler or other furnace and a liquid hydrocarbon source of supply, as, for instance, a tank, of novel means, as will be hereinafter described, whereby, by the pressure of live steam and the condensed water thereof, the supply of liquid hydrocarbon is forced out of the source of supply or tank into a mixing live steam branch pipe of the steam supply pipe, and said liquid hydrocarbon mixed with the live steam iii said branch pipe, and the mixture forced into a circulating vaporizing coil or chamber, and steam superheated and the hydrocarbon vaporized; and from said steam superheating and vaporizing coil o i chamber, the hydrocarbon is forced by the live steam to the air duct of a blower, and this mixture mixed with air in the air duct of the blower, and thence introduced beneath and up through a mass of solid carbonaceous fuel on a grate or re bed of a furnace, and this compound blast of air, superheated steam and hydrocarbon vapor thus utilized as an auxiliary fuel.
My invention also consists in a combination of pipes and cocks, as will be hereinafter described, whereby, at will, either hydrocarbon unmixed with steam can be fed out of the tank into the vaporizing coil or chamber by pressure of live steam from the boiler, aud condensed water thereof; or the liquid hydrocarbon mixed with live steam can be introduced into a steam superheating and liquid hydrocarbon vaporizing coil or chamber, and thence passed in a mixed condition to the air duct of the blower and there mixed with air and passed beneath and up through a mass of solid carbonaceous fuel on a grate or supportingbed of the furnace, and thus utilized asan auxiliary fuel.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents my invention and a boiler furnace in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a cross section showing the boiler furnace in section and my invention in front elevation. Figs. 3 and 4 are similar views to Figs. l and 2, but showing the invention as adapted for passing only the liquid hydrocarbon into the vaporizer, vaporizing it and from thence passing the vapor into a steam pipe and thence into a branch pipe wherein it is mixed with steam, and the mixture passed to the air d uct and there mixed with air and passed beneath and up through the solid carbonaceous fuel supporting bed of afurnace.

Theblower in the illustration given consists of a duct or tuyere F andsteam jetting device G connected with a steam pipe H leading from the boiler E; but the discharging portion l-I4 of the steam pipe H may be entered into the duct of a fan blower as illustrated in Fig. 3 of Letters Patent No. 485,820, granted to me November 8,1892, or in any other practical way, whereby a mixture of air, steam and vapor of liquid hydrocarbon can be forced into the ash pit or underneath and up into a mass of solid carbonaceous fuel on a grate or other appropriate fuel supporting bed; or into any other suitable part of a boiler furnace and utilized as an auxiliary fuel for facilitating and promoting combustion.
In the drawings I have shown a mechanism comprising a tank I, water chamber a, pipe I6 with cock 17, the filling means l with cock I2, or the filling means I3 with cock I4, the liquid hydrocarbon conducting pipes K, K', K2 and the globe valve M and the vaporizing coil or chamber .I and jet nozzle d, but the construction and arrangement of the parts are the same as in my application for a patent tiled December 22, 1892, Serial No. 456,023, and claimed in said application, and therefore need not be described herein more particularly. So, too, is the construct-ion of the steam pipe H, its branches I-l', H2, H3, H4, H5, H6, H7, globe valves L and N, and drip cock or valve s the same as in my aforesaid application for a patent, and claimed in said application, and therefore need not to be described herein more particularly.
In connection with the construction and IOO arrangement of parts shown and described in my aforesaid application or any other suit-` able means adapted for supplying steam and hydrocarbon to the apparatus, two horizontal transverse pipes 0 0', each provided with a globe cock 02, 03, are employed for connecting the pipe H4 with the circulating steam superheating and hydrocarbon vaporizing coil or chamber J; also a vertical pipe 05 provided with a globe valve 0G is provided for connecting the vertical portions of the pipe K above and below the vaporizi'ng coil or chamber J; and globe valves 07, 08, are provided on said portions of the pipe K. A globe valve O4 is also provided on the mixing pipe H4 between the horizontal transverse pipes O, O. Vith this arrangement, it will be seen that when the globe valves L, M and N, and O2, 03 and 06, are opened, the liquid hydrocarbon and steam being thus allowed to circulate, the operation is as follows: The steam passing from pipe H along pipes H8, H5, H6, and H7 enters the water chamber a beneath the liquid hydrocarbon in tank I, and forces the liquid hydrocarbon out of the tank into the pipes K K', 05, K:2 and through discharging nozzle cl into live mixing branch pipe H4 where it is mixed with the live steam, and then the mixture passes into a cross pipe O and thence into the liquid steam superheating and liquid hydrocarbon vaporizing coil or chamber, and through cross pipe 0 into the lower end of pipe H4 leading to air duct of blower. If it is desired to have simply the liquid hydrocarbon pass through the vaporizingcoil or chamber the cocks L, M and N, 08, O4 and 07 are opened, and the cocks 02, O3, 04i are closed; and the operation is as follows: The liquid hydrocarbon supplied from the tank as before described passes through pipe K into the vaporizing chamber or coil, and therefrom through branch K2 into nozzle CZ, and into the live steam mixing pipe H4 and therefrom the mixture passes to the air duct of the blower. In the event that the supply of hydrocarbon becomes exhausted and it is not convenient to immediately refill the tank I, the valves M, N, 02, 03 and 08 are closed, the valves 04 and L being already opened, and the operation is as follows: The steam passes directly through pipes H, H2 and H3 into the pipe H4 and thence to air duct of the blower where the steam mixes with air, and the mixture passes to the fire when the cock M is used on the apparatus.
Instead of manipulating all of the cocks mentioned to effect the last mentioned operation, the cock 07 might remain open, as cocks M and 03 being closed would prevent any steam from passing into the vaporizing coil or chamber.
In Figs. 3 and ft, a slightly different construction and arrangement of pipes and vaporizing coil or chamber to that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is shown, whereby the liquid hydrocarbon mixed with live steam is passed through the mixing live steam pipe, thence to the steam superheating and hydrocarbon vaporizing coil or chamber, and thence to the air duct of the blower. In this arrangement, a pipe R and three cocks R', R2, R3 are provided as shown, and on opening the cocks L, M and N and R R2, and closing cock R3, the steam and hydrocarbon will flow through the mixing branch pipe H4 into the steam superheating and hydrocarbon vaporizing coil or chamber, thence into the air duct of the blower. In the event of the liquid hydrocarbon becoming exhausted in tank I, steam alone can be passed directly to the blower duct by closing cocks M, R R2 and opening cock R3, whereupon the steam will pass directlyto the air duct of the blower.
As the cock M is simply provided as an additional regulator to the l'low of the liquid hydrocarbon, its provision is not absolutely essential to the working of the apparatus, as the flow of liquid hydrocarbon can be regulated by the cock N by regulating the pressure from the steam supply. The cock M, may, therefore, be dispensed with.
What I claim as my invention is l. In a furnace, the combination of a live steam pipe H from a boiler or other source of steam supply, a liquid hydrocarbon conducting pipe K connected with a source of supply, a circulating heating coil or chamber J, apipe R connected with the steam supply pipe H, a branch trap H2 connected with the steam supply pipe and with a live steam branchrpipe H4 of the steam supply pipe, cocks R', R4 and R3 applied respectively to the branch H2, to a branch between the circulating heating coil or chamberJ and to branch R, and also to the branch R between the branch H8 and the cock R2; and valves or cocks L and N, the cock L being on the steam pipe H and the cock Nsuitably located on branch of supplystcam pipe, substantially as described.
2. In a furnace the combination of asteam supply pipe from a boiler or other source of steam supply, a liquid hydrocarbon conducting pipe connected to a source of supply, a circulating heating coil or chamber connected with the hydrocarbon conducting pipe and with the steam supply pipe, the pipes O, O', 05, the pipes 0 and 0 being connected with the circulating heating coil and the pipe H4, at points above and below the cock 04, and the one 05 to the hydrocarbon conducting pipe K and its branch K2 at point-s above and below the cocks 07,08, and globe valves or cocks 02, 03, 04, 06, on pipes 0, 0 H4, 05, and valves or cocks L, N, the valve L being on the steam supply pipe and the valve N suitably located on branch of supply steam pipe, substantially as described.
