FIRE-EXTINGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. {197,180, dated May 9, 1893.
Application filed January 22, 1891. Serial N0. 373.723- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MICHAEL JOSEPH HOL- LAND, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Fire-Extinguishers, of which thefollowing is a specification.
The object of my improvementis to provide for extinguishing fires more effectually than heretofore has been possible.
The improvement is particularly applicable to use on steamships although not confined thereto.
The improvement consists in taking the car bonic acid gas resulting from combustion and directing it to the fire to be extinguished. The improvement involves various mechanical parts for this purpose.
The accompanying drawing is a longitudinal section of a steamship fitted with apparatus involving my improvement, a portion of the steamship being broken away to economize space.
A designates a system of boilers provided with furnaces discharging carbonic acid gas resulting from combustion intoasmoke-stack or fiue B.
O designates a pipe leading from the smokestack or flue B, and communicating with a scrubber D. From this scrubber a pipe, E, extends to a pump or suction blowerEwhich is capable of drawing the carbonic acid gas from the stack or flue B and forcing it into any desired part of the vessel.
G designates a pipe leading into the lower part of the vessel. It may discharge into a chamber covered by a screen H if desired, or it may open directly into the main hull of the vessel.
I designates a pipe discharging into the air outside the vessel. A pipe, J, extends between the pipe E and the pipe G, and a pipe K extends between the latter and the pipe I. The blower is connected with the pipe I by means of a pipe L. The pipe E has a stop cock e combined with it. Asimilar stop cock j is combined with the pipe J. A stop cock 1.: is combined with a pipe K and astop cook 11 is combined with the pipe I.
Whenever it is desired to force carbonic acid gas into the hull of the vessel, the stop cocks e 7e will be opened and the stop cocks t'j will be closed, whereupon the pump or blower F will draw the carbonic acid gas from the stack or flue B through the pipe 0,
scrubber D and pipe E, and force it thence through the pipes L K into the pipe G, so that it will be discharged into the hull of the vessel. 7
After the extinction of a fire, it may be desirable to free the hull of the vessel from the carbonic acid gas, and this maybe readily done by means of the pump or blower F if the stop cocks e 7e are closed and the stop cocks 'ij are opened, for then the pump or blower will draw the gases within the hull out through the pipe G, thence through the pipe J into such pump or blower and force them through the pipe L into the pipe I so as to discharge them into the air above the vessel. Obviously the pipe 0 could communicate with the furnace instead of with the stack or flue with the same result.
It will be readily seen that the apparatus which I have described could be applied to any furnace or fire chamber or a fine leading therefrom, and would serve as an effectual means for extinguishing fire.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a furnace, stack, or flue, of a scrubber, a pipe leading from the furnace, stack, or flue to the scrubber, a blower having a pipe connection with the scrubber, a cock in said pipe, a pipe leading into a vessel, a pipe communicating with the blower and discharging outside the vessel, a cock in said pipe, a pipe, provided with a cock, extending from the connection between the scrubber and blower to the pipe leading into the vessel and a pipe, having a cock, leading from the last named pipe into the discharge pipe, the said blower being arranged between the furnace, stack, or due and the discharge pipe, substantially as specified.
2. In a fire extinguisher, the fan blower, a valved gas supply pipe connected to one side of the blower casing, a valved force pipe leading from the other side of the blower casing, and a valved exhaust pipe also connected with the blower casing and with said force pipe, substantially as set forth.
