Description
UNITED Srnrss .erntet errent or new Yoran, n. Y.
BMPROVEMENT IN SPERET=LEVELS.
Speeilicution forming part of Letters Patent N0. @lt, dated September 5, 18Go.
To all vtriton/t it lmay concern:
Be it known that I, Renner T. BURNETT, of the city, county, and State ot' New York., have invented e new and useful Improvement inSpirit-Levels; and Ido hereby declare that the followingis n'i'ull, cleeigsn I erect descrip` tion thereof, vwhich will enable those skilled in the art to ineke and use the seine, reference being had to theccconipenying drnwiiigs, iorrning` part of this speciicction, in which Iiigure represents :t front elevation of this invention. Fig. 2 is tttrnnsverse verticntsection ot' the seine, taken in the plane indicated by the line x nt', Fig. 1.
Similar ietters oi' reference indicate corte sponding parts.
rI`he object ot' this invention is to facilitate the operation o t introducing the vial into the case ot' u spirit-level,l und to arrange seid case so that the vial con be readil'yy adjusted to any desired angle.
'Ihc case is constructed ot' two trough-shaped boxes, cachot which is cnst solid with, or other- Wiserigidly attached to, en annular tjonge in such :t manner thnt when the two henges ere secured together the boxes form n tirin end solid ense for the viel, and by separating the Iienges the boxes can be taken eport and the viel can be removed or o. new viel introduced. The in'nges nre itted into :t circuler socket which is secured to the straight-edge, so that the same, together with the viel, can he adjusted to any desired angle, and they are held in position by :t set ot' springcetches which drop into notches corresponding.,lr to thedit'erent angles for which the vial is to be adjusted.
A represents e straight-edge, made ot' custiron or other similar material, and provided with a. circuler socket, B, which is intended to receive the vial. In practice I make the streigh tedge and the socket out of cast-iron, and strengthen the Whole by eJ rib extending from the socketin both directions, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings. The vial is secured in a. case,
C, of 1cress or other suitable materiel, end this caseis composed of two troughsheped boxesb,
each ot' which is arranged dienietrieelly in en annuler flange, c, es shown.. iii/Then the two ,flan ges ere placed together and secured to each other by screws or other snitohe ineens the boxes b form the onse, which is capable to hold 'the rial, es shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Seid hongos are provided with e. groove, b, in their circnniterence, and this groove tits into en. internat rim, u, of the socket B., so that scid deugen, together with the cese' t), con be freely turned in either direction. Spring catches c, whichdrop into notches in the edge of one of the thinges, serre to hold the case in the desired position, and seid notches are so arranged that they correspond to the Various angles to which the vini is to be set. The springcotches are scoured to the face ot' the rim t by ineens ot screwsl, which pass through slots in the catches, as olesriy shown in Fig'. I of thedrmvings,so that seid springe-Limbes can be adjusted in either direction in order to eccoiniodnte their position to the correct angle desired.
This spirit-level is strong and durable. It is not lin-ble to get ont of truth, und it' by sonie `accident the viol breaks, thecnse cen be rendi ly opened to remove the broken viel ond put in a new one, and after the new vial hns been put in the level can be easily adjusted by shitting the spring-catches until theyv correspond tothe new viel.
I el-.tini ns new und desire to secure by Letters Patent shaped boxes arranged dianietricttllyiu ennuler flanges which are secured in the socket B, substantially ns and for the purpose set forth.
2. The adjustable spring-catches c, in coinbination with tienges c, case @,nnd socket B, constructed andoperuting substantially es and for the purpose described.
