SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,836, dated. May 2, 1893. Application filed 11111615, 1892- sennuc. 436,787. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER L. MESSER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Syracuse, county of Onondaga, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Grinding or Polishing Wheels, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a grinding or polishing wheel which is mounted on a body or frame, formed of separate parts which are connected by springs in such manner that the wheel operates normally as any other of its class, but which when subjected to extraordinary pressure or strain is permitted to yield or hold back, thus avoiding injury to or breakage of the wheel or its support, as will be hereinafter set forth.

Referring to the drawings:-A designates the hub of an emery or other grinding or polishing wheel or wheels, and B designates two flanges on the periphery thereof.
C designates two annuli, whose inner portions freely embrace the flanges B, and whose outer portions are provided with flanges D which project inwardly or toward each other forming a rim E on which the wheel is placed and sustained. Screwed to the annuli C are plates F of annular form, the same being adapted to firmly clamp the wheel in position, aportion of the wheel being shown in dotted lines Fig. 2.
G designates bolts or screws which are connected with the flanges B, andI-I designates bolts which are connected with the annuli C, it being noticed that said bolts G and H extend parallel with the hub A.
In the annular space formed by the flanges B and annuli C, are springs J, which are of bent and coiled form, the end coils or eyes thereof being fitted alternately or in somewhat zig-zag order on the bolts G and H, it
now being seen that the annuli C and the parts carried by the same including the wheel or stone, are connected with the flanges B of the hub, and consequently with the hub by the springs J, which connection though exceedingly firm in its nature, is of an elastic or yielding nature, whereby when the wheel or stone is in use, it revolves with the hub as one. Should however, any extraordinary pressure or strain be applied to or exerted upon the wheel, whereby the motion of the latter is resisted, it yields orholds back sufficiently to preventinjury to or breakage of the wheel or its carrying parts, the effect of which is evident. When the wheel is relieved of the pressure or strain, it moves forward and resumes its original position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A supporting body for a polishing or grinding wheel consisting of a peripheral portion with a rim on which the stone is solidly sustained, and a clamp therefor, a separate hub portion, which loosely sustains said peripheral portion and springs connecting said portions between said rim and the hub, substantially as described.
2. A supporting body fora polishing or grinding wheel, consisting of hub and peripheral portions, and a yielding connection for said portions, the peripheral portion being provided with a clamping device for the wheel, the peripheral portion being loosely supported on said hub portion substantially as described.
3. A polishingor grinding wheel having a supporting body formed of a hub portion, a separate peripheral portion which is loosely sustained on said hub portion, clamping plates on said peripheral portion, and springs extending from said hub portion to said peripheral portion and connecting said portions, said parts being combined substantially as described. 4. A supporting body for a polishing or grinding wheel formed of a hub with peripheral flanges thereon, annuli which freely embrace said flanges, clamping plates for the wheel fitted on said annuli,inwardly projecting flanges 0n the annuli forming a periph-- 10 grinding wheel having peripheral and hub portions, a bolt on each of said portions, and springs forming a yielding connection for said portions, the same extending alternately from the bolt of one portion to the bolt of the other portion, substantially as described.
