WILLIAM S. HARRIS, OF NILES, OHIO.
METALLIC ROOFING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,685, dated May 2, 1893.
Application filed June 18, 1892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM S. HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Niles, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Roofing; andIdo hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to metallic roofing; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, whereby the metal sheets are secured in position on the root.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan View, from above, of a portion of the roofing, showing the nail covers at different stages of completion. Fig. 2 is a cross-section taken on the line w w in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-section similar to that shown in Fig. 2, but shows a modification in the joint.
A are the metal plates which are used to cover the roof and are provided with standing edges a in the ordinary manner.
B is the cap which consists of a folded piece of metal slipped over the adjacent edges a.
C is a nail which is driven through the cap B between the standing edges a into the sheathing D under the plates A. This nail may have a round or a T-shaped head, and a narrow space is left between the head of the nail and the top of the cap.
E is a nail cover consisting of a small metal plate provided with a slot e. This plate E is Serial No. 437,133. (No model.)
first slipped under the head of the nail as 7 and the standing edges, as'shown at 4 in Fig. 1.
This cover protects the head of the nail and prevents the wet from getting to it.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3 the cap B is formed of a fold of metal bent downwardly' from the top of the standing edge of one of the roofing plates.
What I claim is- 1. The combination, with the roofing plates having standing edges and a cap, of a nail driven through the cap between the said standing edges, and a cover under the nail head, folded over at one end to cover the nail head, and bent down upon each side of the joint, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the roofing plates having standing edges and a cap, of a nail driven through the cap between the said standing edges, and a cover provided with a slot and slipped under the nail head, folded over at one end to cover the nail head, and
bent down upon each side of the joint, sub-.
stantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix mysignaturein presence of two witnesses;
