J. H. WATT.
COMBINED PLUEY BASE AND THIMBLE. No. 496,626. Patented May 2, 1893.
I. uh! I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. VV ATT, OF BARNESVILLE, OHIO.
COMBINED FLUE-BASE AND THIMBL E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,626, dated May 2, 1893. Application filed December 10, I892. Serial No. 454,707. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that 1, JAMES H. WATT, of
Barnesville,in the countyof Belmont and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Flue-Base and Thimble; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
This invention is designed for use in houses where flues are built up from upper stories 0nly,'instead of from the ground, and its object is to provide a combined pipe thimble and flue-base, and itconsists in the novel construction .and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings:-Figure 1 represents a side View of the thimble in position, with flue superimposed thereon. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical transverse section through the thimble. Fig. 3 is a top view; Fig. 4 a transverse horizontal sectional view thereof looking downward.
A designates the top plate, preferably rectangular, and of such size that the brick flue Z may be built thereupon. It has a central opening around which is a depending collar A of sufficient length to extend through the floor and ceiling of an ordinary building.
B designates the bottom plate, having a central opening to receive the lower end of collar A, and preferably circular. It is attached to plate A by means of bolts 0, O, the lower ends of which may be formed with eyes 0, engaging hooks b, b, secured to the upper side of plate B. On the upper surface of plate B are formed equidistant radial lugs D, D, which may be transversely notched as at d, d.
E is a cylinder of larger diameter than collar A and surroundin the same bein con- 3 P 9 D more or less toward plate B. When the plain edge of cylinder rests on the lugs it is upheld entirely oft plate B, when notches e are set over lugs it is slightly lowered, and when notches e are set over the lugs its plain edge will rest on the surface of theplate B. By
this means provision is made for adjusting the thimble to floors and ceilings of different thicknesses, and at the same time provision is made for an air circulation around the collar, and between it and the cylinder. Fresh air. may be admitted into the space between the collar and cylinder through holes I) in plate B, as shown.
In applying a'thimble a hole is cut through the floor and ceiling at the desired place and the plate A laid thereover, collar A depending through the opening, the plate A resting on the girders o'r sleepers of the flooring. The cylinder is then slipped around the collar, and
plate B slipped thereon, and bolted to plate A, as indicated in the drawings the lower surface of plate B being flush with the plastering on the ceiling. fitting thimble is thus made, and the stove pipe can be run into the flue through the collar without danger. The device may also be employed as a register for hot air.
The collar and top plate may be cast in one piece; the device gives additional security against accidental fires, as the pipe and collar are both kept out of contact with the joints or ceiling, and a free circulation of air is admitted between the cylinder and collar, and a neater finish can be made by plastering up to the lower plate, than can be made in ordinary arrangements where the box extends from the floor through the joist and to the lower edge of the ceiling.
Having thus described my invention, what A durable, safe and well 1 I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters lugs on its upper surface, the bolts connect- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as ing the top and bottom plates, the cylinder my own I affix my signature in presence of two to surrounding the collar mounted on the lugs Witnesses.
of the bottom plate and confined between said plates, the bottom plate having perforation to admit passage of air between the cylinder VVit-nesses:
JAMES H" WVATT.
' and collar, all constructed and arranged sub- WILs PARKER,
stantially as and for the purpose set forth. 0. J. HOWARD.
