OSCAR SYDNEY LAMBERSON, OF SIOUX CITY, IOWA.
LATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,570, dated May 2, 1893.
Application led December 15, 1891. Serial No. 415,163. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR SYDNEY LAMBER- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sioux City, in the county of Woodbury and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and I dohereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same.
This invention relates to locks, chiefly to that class having a knob operated latch.
The' object of the invention is to provide simple means for conveniently operating the latch bolt and at the same time obviating the partial rotation of the knob generally required to actuate the latch bolt:
The improvement consists of the novel features and the peculiar construction and combination of the parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and which are shown in the annexed drawings,in which- Figure l is a detail section of a lock embodying my invention, showing the relative position of the lock to the door to which it is applied, and the relative disposition of the escutcheons carrying the knobs by means of which the latch bolt is operated. Fig. 2 is a view of the interior of the lock, the cap plate of the case being removed, showing the operation of the latch bolt by dotted lines.-
Fig. 3 is a front view of the escutcheon. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the knob detached.
The lock may be what is known as a rim lock or a Inortise lock. In the illustration the invention is shown applied to a mortise lock. The case A for inclosing the operating parts of the lock, may be of any desired pattern to meet the required purpose. The look bolt Bgis of usual construction and operationfbei'ng actuated by a key in the well known manner. C constructed to slide through the end of the case and guided in its movements by positive means, is connected at its inner end with the elbow leverD by the link E. The latch C is The latch bolt easily reversed to adapt the lock for either side of the door. The horizontal member of the elbow lever D extends across the path of coincident openings in the'sides ot' the case through which the shanks fof the knobs F extend, and is pressed upon by spring G to project the latch C. The knob F is pivoted to the escutcheon H by a pin h which passes through the lugs h on the said escutcheon and through the shankf. The outer ends of the lugs are formed on the arc of a circle whose center coincides Withthe pin h', and the inner end of theknob is correspondingly curved to form a close joint with the said lugs. The spring I located in a recess in the knob and having engagement with one of the lugs h, returns the knob to a normal position afterbeing depressed to withdraw the latch.
When the escutcheons are to be provided. y in pairs one for each side of the door-care f must be observed to arrange them so that the Shanks f of the oppositely disposed knobsy will overlap and pass by each other freely.
The parts being assembled and the lock in position the latch C can be operated from either side of the door by depressing the knob. rlhis operation elevates the inner end of the shank f and thehorizontal member of the elbow lever D and withdraws the latch as will be readily appreciated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a lock the combination of a latch bolt, an elbow lever pivotally supported at the elbow, and having its vertical portion pendent and connected by link with the latch bolt, a spring pressing down on the horizontal portion of the said elbow lever, a knob pivotally supported by its shank, which as shown extends beneath the horizontal portion of the elbow lever, and a spring to prevent the knob from exerting any pressure on the elbow lever, and to return the said knob to a normal position after being actu- "ated, substantially as set forth.
bolt, and an escutcheon having curved lugs, be returned to a normal position after being 1o of :L knob pivotaily connected to the said actuated, substantially as described.

other end adapted to engage with one of the CHARLES IVENS, said curved lugs, whereby the said knob will GEO. STIDWORTHY.
