STREET-CAR H EATER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,091, dated April 25, 1893.

Be it known that I, GARsoN MYERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Street-Car Heaters, of which the following is a specification.

The primary object of my improvement is to adapt a heater of the class employed for street-car purposes tobe set on a ear-seat in a manner to render it readily removable for the season not requiring cars to be artificially heated, thereby to avoid marring the car by the removal, and also to avoid defacing the seat, as is commonly done by cutting a section of it to admit the stove when set on the car-floor, and which necessitates patching the seat by inserting a seat-section in place of the stove when removed.

My object is,also, to provide an especially desirable construction of the case or box portion of a car-heater, for containing the stoveportion thereof, whereby it shall be the better adapted for its shielding purpose and to be supported without bearing or resting on the seat-portion of a car-seat, thereby preventing it from injuring or defacing the upholstery.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a broken View in sectional side elevation showing my improved heater in position on a car-seat; and Fig. 2 shows the heater in front elevation, partly broken.

A is the stove, which may be of any wellknown or desired form and construction suitable for use in a street-car, and the smokepipe t of which may lead through the roof of the car.

B is the boX in which the stove rests and aording a shield which I adapt, by my improved construction thereof the better to perform its function and to rest lightly on a carseat and avoid bearing on the seat portion thereof while protecting the latter and the surroundings from injury by the heat from the stove, and also by causing it to conform to the surface of the seat against which it is secured, thereby to enhance the neatness of its appearance and the stability of its position.

comprising sides r r, insulated, preferably by being hollow, a zinc-covered base q lined under the zinc, with suitable material non-conductive of heat, such as asbestus p, a hollow back o, lined ou its inner side with nonconducting material p, and forming a dead-air space and an apron-like addition or support n, extending downward from the forward end of the base. Below the base q and behind the back o, respectively, I provide the dead-air chambers C and D, which should intercommunicate, as represented, and may be formed with metal sheathing all in one piece, as represented. The bottoml of the chamber C and rear surface of the chamber D are' concave to conform, respectively, to the surfaces of the seat-portion m and back Z of a seat E.

To adjust my improved heater in a car the box-shield B for the stove A is imposed upon the top of a seat E and fastened by screws, or the like, to the frame-Work of the. seat through the apron n and, above the dead-air chamber D, to a rail le above the seat-back.

Vith the stove A in position in its box B, the Whole thus resting lightly on the seat E, as it is mainly sustained by suspension by the fastening at the apron n and rail k, the heater presents an attractive piece of car furniture, and is effectively prevented by the non-conducting base, sides and back of the box and by the heat-insulating dead-air spaces interposed at the seat-portion and back of the seat, from conducting the heat to the seat to an extent that would injure it, so that the seat may be upholstered, as represented, without danger of injury from the heater. The construction, moreover, enables the heater to be as readily removed as it is adjusted into position; and when removed there remains no defacing indication of its presence but the seat is left in its original condition with space to accommodate an eXtra passenger or two.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, in a car, with a car-seat, of a heater comprising a stove and a boxshield containing the stove and having sides r, a base q provided with an apron extension n, a dead-air chamber C in its base conform-= IOO jurious bearing on the said seat-portion, substantially as described.
