MOLDING-FLASK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,014, dated April 25, 1893.

Be it known that I, EDWARD C. STEARNS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Molding-Flasks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a molding flask composed of a lower part or drag and an upper part or cope provided with steadying pins and sockets, which retain the drag and cope against lateral displacement upon each other, and has the object to provide means for taking up the wear upon the steadying pins, or produce a snug fit of the parts.
In the accompanying drawingsz-Figure l is a vertical section through the steadying pin and connecting parts in line 1 1, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof with the cope in section. Fig. 3 is a vertical section in line 3 3, Fig. 2 at right angles to Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a vertical section in line 4 4, Fig. 2 through the bracket and adjustable plate through which the steadying pin passes. Fig. 5 is a perspective view ofthe bracket through which the steadying pin passes. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the plate which carries the socket piece bearing against the steadying pin.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
A B represent portions of the drag and cope, respectively, o f a molding flask.
C represents one of the upright steadying pins whereby the drag and cope are held against lateral movement on each other and which is attached with its lower end to the outer side of the drag and passes through a socket piece on the cope.
D represents a horizontal open bracket through which the upper portion of the steadying pin passes and which is provided with a Vert-ical plate d whereby the bracket is secured to the cope.
E represents a socket piece which is arranged in the opening of the bracket and which bears against the inner side of the steadying pin. This socket piece is formed on the inner end of a carrying plate E which is movably attached to the under side of the bracket and provided with an opening e through which the steadying pin passes. The
inner vertical side or back of the pin is V- shaped and the outer or front side of the socket piece E is correspondingly shaped.
F .represents Vertical clamping screws whereby the plate carrying the socket piece is attached to thebracket. These clamping screws are arranged in longitudinal slotsf formed in the bracket on opposite sides of its opening and engage with their lower screw threaded ends in threaded openings f formed in the carrying plate, as represented in Fig. 4. Washers f2 are preferably interposed between the heads ofthe clamping screws and the upper side of the bracket.
G represents a horizontal adjusting screw whereby the socket piece is adjusted toward and from the rear side of the steadying pin. This adjusting screw is arranged on the carrying plate at right angles to the steadying pin and engages with its inner threaded end in a threaded opening g formed in the outer end of the bracket. This screw is held against lengthwise movement on the carrying plate 4by a head h and collar h formed on the screw and a bifurcated jaw c' formed upon the carrying plate and engaging between the head 7L and collar h. Upon turning the adjusting screw it moves longitudinally in the threaded opening of the bracket and carries the movable carrying plate and socket piece with it. When the socket piece and steadying pin do not fit snugly by reason of wear or other causes, the parts can be tightened by loosening the clamping screws and turning the adjusting screw in the proper direction for moving the carrying plate outwardly until the play between the socket piece and steadying pin has been taken up and'then again securing the socket piece in position by tightening the clampingA screws. The upper side of the carrying plate is provided with longitudinal grooves j which receive feathers j formed on the under side of the bracket, thereby guiding the carrying plate in its movement and assisting in preventing lateral displacement ofthe carrying plate on the bracket.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination with the drag provided with asteadying pin, and the cope, ofa bracket secured to the cope and provided with an opening which receives the steadying pin, and

a carrying plate adjnstably secured to the bracket and having an opening which receives the steadying pin, and provided with a socket piece which bears against the steadying pin, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a drag provided with a steadying pin, and the cope, of a bracket secured to the cope and provided with an opening through which the pin passes, a carrying plate provided with a socket piece and capable of movement on the bracket toward and from the side of the cope, and a horizontal adjusting screw connecting the bracket with the carrying plate and electing the adjustment of the latter toward and from the side of the cope, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with the drag provided with a steadying pin, and the cope, of a bracket secured to the cope and provided with a longitudinal slot, a carrying plate provided with a socket piece engaging against said pin, a vertical clarnping screw arranged in said slot and attached to said plate, and a horizontal adj usting screw connecting the carrying plate with the bracket, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination with the drag provided with a steadying pin, andthe cope, of a bracket secu red to the cope and provided with a longitudinal feather, a carrying plate provided with a longitudinal groove which receives said feather, and with a socket piece which engages against said pin, a vertical clamping screw passing through a longitudinal slot in the bracket and securing the carrying plate tothe bracket, and a longitudinal adjusting screw connecting the bracket with the carrying plate, substantially as set forth.
