WITNBE5E5= UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEe JOHN VOLZ, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
FASTENING FOR TABLE-LEGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 495,857, dated April 18, 1893.
Application filed November 16, 1892- Serlal No. 452,118- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN VOLZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenings for Table-Legs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to metal fastenings for table-legs and consists of the construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings,-Figure 1 is an elevational view of one corner of a table showing my improvement; the interlocking parts being seated to their normal positions. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of one corner of a table-top and a section of one leg which is not interlocked to its position. Fig. 3 is a similar view to Fig. 1; in this case the interlocking parts are merely placed loosely together but are not seated to their normal positions. Fig. 4 is a side view of the interlocking plate, H.
The letter, A, designates the table-top, B, the rails on which the table-top rests and to which it is attached, and, 0, one of the legs. A metal plate, D, has three flat surfaces, e, f, f, each at an angle to the other; the central surface, 6, is for attachment to a metal interlocking plate on the post and the two side surfaces, f, which project from the central surface at an angle of forty-five degrees are for attachment to the rails, B, by means of screws, The central surface, 6, has two vertical slots, h, which are larger at their lower ends and narrower attheir upper ends and said upper ends have beveled side-edges, h; it also has a hole, j. An interlocking plate, H, has screw-holes for attachment to the leg and two dovetail-shaped lugs, 2', which first enter the broad lower ends of the slots,
h, and then fit snug and interlock in the narrow upper end thereof; this plate is also provided at its lower end with alateral rest-flange 70, on which the lower edge of the central part of the plate, D, is seated when the parts are locked together. A hole, j, is in this plate and has position to coincide with the hole, j, in the plate, D, when the latter is seated on the rest-flange, k, as stated; a screw, 7' is then entered through the two holes, j, j, and into the post and said screw serves to confine the two plates together and thereby prevents the table leg from accidentally disconnecting when the table is lifted for any purpose.
From the foregoing description in connection with the drawings the manner of attach ing the parts and the mode of use will be understood.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described plates for fastening legs to tables comprising the plate, D, having the three surfaces at an angle to each other,- the two sides, f, being for attachment to the table-rails and the center, e, having vertical slots which are broader at the lower end and have beveled side-edges at the upper end; and the plate, H, for attachment to the table-leg and having dove-tail-shaped lugs, '5, which interlock with the said slots and also having at its lower end a lateral rest-fiange, 70, on which the lower edge of said central part seats.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN VOLZ. Witnesses:
