Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM SHEPPARD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVED LIQUID SOAP.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,561, dated August 2?, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM SHEPPARD, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Liquid Soap; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same.
This invention is based on the discovery that by the addition of a comparatively small quantity of common soap to alarge quantity of spirits ofammonia or hartshorn isthickened to the consistency of molasses, and a liquid soap is obtained of superior detergent properties.
The proportion in which I mix the ingredients ofmy liquid soap together is about as follows: common soap, one pound; ammonia, one hundred pounds. I first dissolve the soap monia.
consistency of molasses, and a liquid soap is obtained fit for general consumption. On account of its superior detergent qualities it is valuable for domestic as well as for manufac turing purposes; It can be made at a small cost and it is very convenient for use.
Itmust be remarked that the above propor tion may be changed; and I do notwish to coufine myself to any particular proportion, but reserve the right to change the same as may be desirable. I
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent Liquid soap made by mixing common soap and hartshorn together, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM SHEPPARD.
