POWER-ACTUATED CIGAR-TIP CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 495,216, dated April 11, 189 3.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BEERs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne county, Pennsylvania,
haveinventedcertainlmprovementsinPower- Actuated Cigar-Tip Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to construct a power actuated cigar cutting device for use 10 in establishments where cigars are sold, and this object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is a perspective view of a cigar tip cutting device constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal sectional View of the same. Fig. 3, is an inverted plan view on the line 12, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4, is an inverted plan view of the driving disk of the machine.
A represents part of a bench or counter to which the-machine is intended to be secured, this counter having formed in it an opening for the reception of the upper portion of the motor casing B, which has, at one side, be-
neath the counter, a branch pipe a terminating within the casing in an inclined nozzle a, said branch being in communication with a supply of air, Water, or other motive fluid 0 under pressure, so that said motive fluid is permitted to escape from the nozzle 0 in a forcible jet or stream, the waste fluid, if the latter is a liquid being conveyed to any desired point through a suitable discharge pipe 3 5 B communicating with the contracted lower portion of the motor casing. The top of the casing is closed by a plate D to which said casing is suitably secured, or, if desired, the casing and plate may be cast or otherwise 0 formed in one piece, said plate projecting beyond the limits of thecasing so as to form a flange which can be secured to the shelf or counter by means of screws 6 or in any other available manner.
Extending upward from the plate D is a central tubular projection or column D which constitutes the bearing for a shaft F, and to the upper end of the latter is secured a hub d having anyfdesired number of projecting 5o blades (1' which constitute the cutting knives of the device, the lower end of the shaft being provided with a disk G having on the under side an annular series of buckets f against which the jet or stream from the nozzle a is projected so as to cause a rapid rotation of said disk, and consequently of the shaft F and knives d. The said knives d fit snugly against the under side of a plate I which has a depending annular flange g restin g upon a flange h projecting from the upper portion of the bearing D, as shown in Fig. 2.
The plate I has formed in it a series of tapering apertures m of different diameters, three of these apertures being shown in the present instance, although as many may be employed as desired, or, on the other hand, there may be but asingle aperture in some cases, the use of a series of apertures of different diameters being preferred, however, so as to provide for cutting off more or less of the tip of the cigar, depending upon the aperture into which said tip is inserted.
The chamber bounded by the plate I and flanges g and h constitutes a box for receiving the severed tips of the cigars, which can be removed at intervals by lifting off the flanged plate I, this operation being also resorted to when it is desired to gain access to the knives d for sharpening or other purposes.
A tapered casing J preferably extends from the base plate D to the box at the top of the machine, although this casing performs no useful part in the operation of the machine and may be dispensed with without in any- Wise affecting such operation.
I have shown the device as occupying a vertical position, but it will be evident that it may be placed horizontally or at any desired angle without any material change in structo ure or mode of operation,and if desired a reaction or turbine wheel may be used instead of the impact wheel as a means of driving the knife shaft.
Having thus described my invention, I 5 claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat cut- 1. A power-actuated cigar tip cutter, con sisting of a plate having a projecting bearing,
a shaft adapted to said bearing and having at one end a cutting knife and at the other end a bucket wheel for'receiving the motive fluid, and an apertured plate supported in contact with the rotating knife, substantially as specified.
2. A power-actuated cigar tip cutter comprising a plate having a projecting bearing cigar tip cutter, the same consisting of a casing having a cap plate with projecting bearing having a flange near the outer end, an apertured plate having a flange resting upon but detachable from the flange of the bear ing, and a shaft having at one end a knife bearing against said plate, and at the other end a wheel with buckets for receiving the motive fluid, substantially as specified.
