WATER-BACK FOR FU RNACES.
$PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 495,072, dated April 11, 1893.'

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES TITTLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Johnstown, in the county of Oambria and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Backs for Furnaces; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a partof this specification.
The invention relates to waterbacks for boilers or furnaces, the same being water as well as steam tight and thus liable to explode when the water has been shut off therefrom by any cause whatever.
The object of my invention is to so construct and arrange a waterbaok that all liability to explosion will be removed in any contingency.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a horizontal sec tion, and Fig. 2 a vertical cross section.
In the drawings, A represents the brickwork of a furnace and B the waterback arranged to run horizontally around the sides and rear of the firebox C. It is made open at the top and extends through the front so as to have the projecting ends I) c, of which the end b communicates with the inlet supply pipe D and the end 0 with the outlet pipe E which may lead to a suitable reservoir for hot water. These pipes D E are provided with the stopcocks d c which are placed at such point as may be most convenient for use. The desired degree of temperature at which the waterback shall supply the water to the reservoir, may
be very accurately adjusted, by manipulating the cocks d 6. By closing the outlet cock e more, the water flows more slowly through warm water out at the outlet pipe; thenceto a reservoir, from which the hot water may be pumped to the boiler at such temperature as may be desired. This purifies the water and prepares it for conversion into steam. If from any cause, the water should cease to flow into my waterback, an avenue is provided for the escape of steam without an explosion.
What Iclaim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
A furnace waterback which is arranged horizontally about theinside of firebox, made open at top to prevent explosion when the watersupply ceases, and having the ends 5 cextended through the front of firebox; the said ends being provided with cocks d 2, whereby the degree of heat imparted to the water may be regulated as set forth.
