Application filed-August 14, 1909. Serial No. 512,922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLF BELER, a cit-izen of the UnitedStates, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State 5 of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Water-Heater, of which thefollow- This invention relates to hot water heaters of that class in which the Water is heated in a series of coils arranged above a gas burner. V
The invention has reference more particularly to the arrangement of the coils,,the
'object being to so arrange the same that the water will be rapidly heated, and to-this end there'is provided a series of connected coils through which the water flows, one of the 1 coils-being located close to the burner. The
water pnters the coil remote from" the burner, and thus receives a preliminary heating, and upon entering the 0011 close to the burner, is instantaneously heated to the desired degree. i

'1 In the drawing, 5 denotes the heater casing, which is supported on legs 6, and contains a gas burner 7, which may be of any structure. The burner is located-near the base of the casing and at the top of the casing is an outlet 8 for the smoke and other products of combustion. In the casing'5, directly above the burner 7, and in close proximity thereto, is mounted a double helical coil 9 of tubing which extends at the top and bottom of the coil through the wall of the casing as indicated at 10and-11, the said ends of the tubing being connected on the outside of the casing to the casing 12 of a temperature regulator, which-controls the'fiow of gas to the burner according to g the temperature of the heated water flowing from theheater, whereby the temperaprevented .from :r sing The re ulator may be of anystructure adapted or the purpose stated, as for instance, the one shown in my P atent'No. 917,704, dated April Within the casing 5, above the coil 9, and arranged concentric thereto, is mounted a series of continuous double helical coilsl3 of tubing, the tubing at the top of the casing extending through the wallof the casing, and being connected to the cold water su ply pipe 14. The tubing at the bottom of the series extends into the coil 9, and is conmected thereto by a suitable coupling- 15, the connection with said coil being made midway between the ends thereo The con- .volutions at the bottom of the series of coils 13 decrease in diameter so that they may enter the coil 9 as stated.
By the herein described arrangement of r coils, it will be seen that the cold water enters the heater at the top, and flows downtwardly through the coils 13 to the lower end further heated to the desired degree. By thus heating the water before it enters the coil 9, less heat is required to raise its temperature to the required degree, and a saving of gas is therefore effected.
. -The heater is simple in structure, efiicient in operation, and economical in its consumption of gas. A gas burner has beenshown, but it will be understood that any other form of burner or heating medium may be flow of gas to the pipe 7.
