SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,957, dated April 4, 1893.
Application filed March 18, 1891.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM H. J ONES and THOMAS C. GREENE, of Liberty, in the county of Union and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVagon-Jacks; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to an improvement in wagon jacks, the object being to provide simple means for the removal of a wheel and the support of the axle while the latter is being oiled, and it consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
The accompanying drawing is a view in elevation of our improved wagon jack.
A represents the body or main portion of the jack. This is made of metal of sufficient strength to withstand the usual weight and strain to which articles of this character are subjected, and it is preferably bent substantially as shown to form a series of steps or angular portions j at one end and an arm b at the other end. The arm I) terminates at its free end preferably in a hook (1 adapted to fasten over the axle just inside of the axleskein, and the opposite end terminates in a hearing or box 0. A spindle B passes loosely through this hearing or box a, it having a handle B on its outer end by which it is grasped in order to slide, turn, or otherwise manipulate it, and on its inner end the spindle is furnished with a shoulder or rest d in which to receive or have rest the extreme outer end of the axle so that the axle is supported by the 40 hook and shoulder and the spindle is in alignment with the axle skein, in position to receive the wheel when it is desired to slide the latter from the axle. Again we have provided the steps j in order that the outer end of the axle may be raised in the old fashioned way, and the proper notch on the jack placed beneath it. The notches j shown in the body of the jack are ordinarily suflicient for this purpose, but in addition to them we provide a shoulder is on the spindle which is higher than the shoulders on the body of the jack and which may be raised still higher and as high as desired by simply pulling outward on handle B and then fastening the spindle by means of set screw d For convenience in removing the not or burr, a wrench is preferably located on arm b.
