To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BENNY Winn SON, engineer, of the Mirrlees lVatson do Yaryan Company,Limited,of 45 Scotland Street, Glasgow, in the counties of Lanark and Benfrew, Scotland, have invented Improvements in Machinery for Cutting or Slicing Sugar- Cane orAn alogous SaccharinePlants, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in machinery for cutting or slicing sugar canes or analogous saccharine plants preparatory to the process of extraction of the juice by diffusion, and has for its object the saving of labor and improved cutting or slicing of the canes.
My invention consists of two disks or cones revolving toward one another and so close together that they almost touch. These disks or'cones are fitted with the usual cutting or slicing, knives, and the canes are fed to these cutting or slicing knives by means of rollers driven atasuitable speed from the shafting that drives the cutting disks or other suitable moving shaft or motor.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan of the machine with two revolving disks. Fig. 2 is an elevation of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view of Fig. 1 showing the disks. Fig. 4 is a plan of the machine with two revolving cones. Fig. 5 is an elevation of Fig. 4-. Fig. 6 is an end view showing face of one cone and side of the other. Fig. 7 is an enlarged plan view of the cones A and A. Fig. 8 is afront View of the cutter-box and blade, and Fig. 9 is a section on line x-mFig. 8. Fig. 10 shows the endless conveyor in side elevation with its driving wheel.
A, A, are the revolving disks or cones fitted with the cutting or slicing knives B,B,B, driven by suitable mechanism in the direction shown by the arrows, always toward each other, from their upper peripheries.
In Fig. 1 the axes of the cutting disks are parallel and the radial knives or cutters which extend to the peripheries are placed on the front faces, in suitable boxes as shown in detail in Figs. '7, 8 and 9. The box b is secured in the disk by any suitable locking device, the blade being fastened by the screws 0, c. As shown in Figs. 3 and 8 the blades may be grooved, so that a crushing or tearing of the cane takes place if found more desirable.
In Fig. 2 the feeding mechanism of wellknown form, is shown with the endless bandcarrier G, driven in unison with the two sets of feed rollersEand F. These rollers may be fluted or plain, and only one set may be used. These rollers guide the cane down the inclined chute S, to the ledger plate L which is shown stationary, but may be provided with adjusting means. Also in Fig. 2 the disk A is shown removed and the cutter or disk A is shown in section,showing the blade in a parallel position and midway between the top plate P, (shown more clearly in Fig. 3) and the ledger plate L.
Figs. 4, 5 and 6, show a modification having cones to hold the blades, which brings the axes of the disks at right angles to each other, so that bevel gear may be used, driving both from one shaft. As shown, the radial knives or cutters of the two revolving cutter-bearing disks A and A meet and extend across the line of feed, and the cane as it is fed down between the plate P and ledger plate L, first receives a shearing action from the side of the chute toward the center, then as the blades pass a line drawn from their centers the out is vertical ending in a shearing action from the center of the chute, outward. This prevents the crowding of the cane to one side as would occur where only one disk with cutters the whole width of the chute was used, the knives necessarily being twice the length of those shown. My invention not only combines the advantage as above cited but the knives being shorter, are easier handled, for grinding.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In combination, with the feeding mechanism, and the two revolving disks or cones which have their cutters pass the ledger plate in the same vertical plane, substantially as described. a
