SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,935, dated April 4, 1893.

To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that we, JOHN THOMSON PAUL and JAMES PAUL,both of GroveW'orksBrandfield Street, Edinburgh, in the county of Mid- Lothian, Scotland, subjects of the Queen of Great Britain,have invented an Improved Automatic Lamp-Extinguisher, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention has for its object to so construct the extinguisher that immediately the lamp is on an incline as in the act of falling, the light is automatically extinguished.

In the drawings, Figurel is. a section of an ordinary lamp showing our improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is also a section of a part of a lamp.

The invention consists in connecting to the extinguisher A a leg 13 which passes through the bottom of the burner G. This leg B below the burner takes the form of an L or other suitable shape. Connected to the leg B below the bottom of this burner there is a chain D, or equivalent connection which passes through an eye E fixed on the underside of the burner. The other end of the chain is connected to a weight E which in its normal position rests on the L-shaped piece of the leg as shown on the drawings.

The operation is as follows:In the case of the lamp being knocked over, immediately it is in the act of falling, the weight F is displaced from the L-shaped piece of the leg B, which falling down the chain D, raises the leg B having the extinguisher A attached to it, and so extinguishes the light. The weight is raised by the lever G which depresses the leg B, till the weight is drawn up and hangs by gravity over its support, the L-shaped extension, whereupon it is lowered again till it rests upon its said support.

It is to be understood that this arrangement can be applied to any ordinary extinguisher.

We claim 1. In a lamp, the combination of a suitable extinguisher, a leg engaging said extinguisher and projecting down into the reservoir, a weight having a flexible connection with said leg, and a rest within the reservoir upon which the weight normally rests substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a lamp, the combination of a suitable extinguisher, a leg connected with said extinguisher and projecting into the lamp reservoir, a weight resting normally on a support above the bottom of the reservoir, and a flexible medium connecting the weight and leg and passing over a guide above its point of attachment to the leg, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a lamp, the combination of an extinguisher a controlling leg, projecting into the lamp reservoir and having atits lower end a support for a weight, a weight normally resting upon said support a connection between the weight and the leg, and a guide over which said connection passes located to hold the weight over its support on the leg when elevated by said connection,all substantially as set forth.

4. In a lamp, the combination of the extinguisher the controllingleg projecting into the reservoir, the weight normally resting on a support, a connection between the weight and the leg, a guide over which the connection passes, located at such a point that the weight when falling raises the leg, and the leg when depressed raises the weight to a point above its support, and a handle without connected with the leg, for depressing it, substantially as herein described.
