SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 494,924, dated April 4, 1893..

To all whom it may concern: f
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. HULL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sheffield, in the county of Colbert, State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in .I ail Lattices or Openings, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in lattices for jails, cell/s, vaults and other structures, and it has for its objects among others to provide an improved construction of opening or window or lattice,
wherein the interstices are bounded upon all sides by flanges on the material of which the lattice is formed. In its preferable form the lattice embodies two or more plates electrically connected and in circuit with a battery and alarm so that in case an attempt is made to cnt a bar or portion of the window an alarm will be sounded. The flanges on the material or plates enables me to conceal the inner or intermediate plate from view and protect the same.
The invention is capable of embodiment in various forms and while in the accompanying drawings I have shown some of those which at present I consider the preferable onesI do not intend to restrict myself to such. The linterstices may assume any desired shape,
n such as circular, rectangular or polygonal as may be desired, and the plates or bars of the lattice may be arranged vertically and horizontally or in a position inclined from a vertical line. They need not necessarily be straight as they may be run zig-zag it preferred.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is an elevation showing a portion of a Wall in which is arranged one of my improved windows or lattices, with a portion broken away. Fig. 2 is a face view ot the window removed. Figs. 3 and 4 are face views showing different forms of openings or interstices. Figs. 5, 6 and 7 show sections of different forms of plates which may be employed in the construction of the window or lattice, and showing also their electrical connections. y
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views'in which they appear.
As above stated, the invention may be embodied in a variety of forms ot construction, the gist of the invention residing in having the walls of theinterstices bounded by lianges which may be integral with one or both of the outer plates of the window or lattice, or secured thereto in such a manner as to protect and conceal the edge of the inner or intermediate plate. These openings or interstices may assume any desired shape; in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 I have shown some of the more simple forms; in Figs. l and 2 they are as it will be noticed, rectangular, While in Fig. 3 they are circular and in Fig. Li they are polygonal; these openings or interstices a may be of any desired size and of course it will be understood that they need not be of uniform size or even shape in the one window or lattice although it would be preferable to make them of uniform size and shape.
In constructing the lattice or window I take a plate as A lof the size required, or it may be a plurality of smaller plates secured together in any suitable manner, and at the openings or interstices this plate is provided with a substantially right-angled :flange a' either integral therewith as shown in full lines, or it may be independent thereof as seen in dotted lines in Figs. 5 and 6. In the form shown in Fig. 5 this flange is again extended at right angles to the said. flange and parallel with the main part of the plate tol form a recess or channel in which is arranged the other plate B, and when electrically connected in the manner shown this inner plate B is insulated from contact with the plate A by suitable insulation as b. The two plates are connected by wires C and D with an alarm D and a battery E. In the form shown in Fig. 6 the eX- tension ot the flange parallel with the main part of the plate is omitted and the end or edge of the plate B abuts against the flange a', being preferably bent at right angles to the body of the plate B as seen in Fig. 6 `to form a flange c. The plates in this form are connected with the battery and alarm the saine as in the form shown in Fig. 5.
In Fig. 7 I have shown the embodiment of my invention with the employment of three plates, the outer oneA having the flanges a', While the plate B has its ends or edges flanged as at c and held between these flanges is the plate F, the three plates being insulated from each other by the insulation b and the outer plate A and the intermediate plate F connected by the Wires C and D with the battery and alarm and also with an automatic drop Gr in the circuit in the usual manner.
It will thus be seen that all parts ot' the lattice or Window are in electric circuit and any attempt to cut or drill through any partthereof will sound an alarm as soon as the drill or other implement passes through one plate and touches the other.
Modiications in detail may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing anj7 of its advantages.
1. A lattice for jails, cells, Vaults and the like having its interstices bounded by a flange on one portion thereof, as set forth.
2. A lattice or opening for jails, cells, vaults and the like composed of a compound plate and having interstices bounded by a flange on one of the plates, as set forth;
vided with interstices bounded by a liange on one portion of the bar or plate, the portions of the plate being insulated and electrically connected with a battery and alarm, as set forth.
4. A lattice for jail cells, vaults and the like composed of `plates insulated from each other and provided with openings bounded by flanges on one portion of the plate, which anges protect and conceal the edges of the other portions of the plate, as set forth.
5. A lattice for jail cells, vaults and the l like composed of plates the abutting edges of which are flanged at the openings therein, as
set forth.
6. A lattice for jail cells, vaults and the like composed` of plates the abutting edges of whichare hanged at the openings therein and insulated, as set forth.
7. A lattice for jail cells, vaults and the which are oppositely flanged at the openings therein and insulated from each other, and
suitable electrical connections between the plates, a battery and an alarm, as set forth.
S. A lattice for jail cells, vaults and the like, composed of flanged insulated plates with` iianged openings, as set forth.
