SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,749, dated April 4, 1893.

Be it known that I, OLIVER A. SMITH, of the county of Clinton, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements ration in detail showing the supporting frame of the cultivator and the reciprocating bar to which the uprights are attached for supporting and adjusting the beams of the plows.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view with parts broken away showing the forward end of the plow beam, means for attaching the same to one of the uprights, and the arch for holdingthe beam rigidly with the other beam carried by the cultivator. Fig. 5 is a vertical longitudinal section of the gearing and the parts attached thereto for operating the reciprocating bar by band. Fig. 6 is an enlarged side elevation with parts broken away showing one end of the lever for elevating the rear end of the plow and the collar fixed to the shaft upon which the said lever moves. Fig. 7 is a perspective View of the shield and the means for attaching the same to the cultivator; and Fig. 8 is a topplan View of the rear end of the plowbeam and means attached thereto for adjusting and securing the plows to the same.
The object of my invention is to dispense with the cumbersome manner of guiding the path of the plows which so far as I am aware is generally done by the feet and substitute therefor a lover which may be actuated by hand from the seat of the cultivator and with but a very little inconvenience on the part of the operator.
My invention further consists in means for adjusting the uprights to which the plow,
beams are secured whereby the same may be set and adjusted to suit the work and it further consists in other'details more specifically to be referred to hereinafter.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a U-shaped bar which forms a supportfor the remaining parts of the cultivator, and 2 represents a pole which is fastened to the top of the curved portion of the .U-shaped bar, the forward end of which pole extends a suitable distance out from the bar 1, the rear end of the same being adapted to support suitable mechanism hereinafter described. To the rear end of the said pole is fixed a keeper 3 as best shown in Fig. 5 through which a square shaft 4 is passed and held in place. The said shaft is of suitable length and extends transversely across the cultivator and is designed to support the several adjustable parts hereinat'ter described. To the free ends of the said shaft are fixed two plates 5 the said plates extending a suitable distance from the said shaft and supportinga round shaft 6 the length of which corresponds to the square shaft 4:. The shaft 6 is supported and held in place by a keeper 7 and support 8 holding the same a suitable distance from the pole 2 and below the shaft 4.
9 represents two collars which are adjustably secured upon the shaft at and on which are movably mounted two hand levers l0 having spring pawls 11 attached thereto the engaging ends of which come in contact with the ratchet plates 12 also fixed to the shaft 4 for holding the said levers in any desired position. The pivoted ends of the said levers 10 are enlarged and provided with a rounded surface, said surface being grooved to receive a chain 13 one end of which chain is attached to said lever and the opposite end fastened to the plow beam. These levers are intended to elevate the plow and free the same from contact with the earth when occasion arises.

It will be wellto'state that the spring pawls employed are of well known construetion and consequently need nodetailed de scription. To the depending wing28 of said bar 14 are adjustably secured-two hanging supports 29 the lower ends of which are provided with openings for the passage of bolts 30 which bolts extend through the casting 31' forming a movable connection betweensaid casting and supports.

Thus it will be seen that the plowshovels may be adjusted in various directions and may be set close together or wide apart as occasion requires. Uponthe round shaft 6 aremovably secured two braces 43 one end of which is attached to the supports 29 above theoasting 31 which hold the said supports in their properpositionwhen draft is applied to the same, the construction of which I shall now proceed to describe. Each of said braces is composed of two arms 44 one end of which .is movably attached .to the supports 29 as best seen in Fig. 2.

Attached to the castings 34 are brake pins 62 having curved upper ends which are adapted to receive and come in contact with the levers when the said levers are depressed for elevating the plow shovels.
The general construction of the device may be changed without departing from the nature of my invention particularly the means for holding the shovels to the castings 84, and therefore I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein shown and described.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a cultivator a shaft 4 attached to the rear end of the pole 2, a second shaft 6 attached to the said shaft 4 by means of plates 5, a U-shaped bar 1 the ends of which are also attached to the said shaft 4, roller bearings attached to the saidU-shaped bar at its curved portion, a reciprocating bar held and guided by said bearings, supports 29 adj ustable on said reciprocating bar, plow beams attached to the said supports, braces 44 leading from the shaft 6 and connected with said supports, and means for operating the said reciprocating bar by hand, substantially as described.
2. In a cultivator, areciprocating bar adapted to be operated by hand, plow beams attached to the same and operated thereby, castings 34 attached to the opposite ends of the plow beams, shovels adj ustably secured to said castings,levers 1O movably secured to the cultivator and a chain attached to the said lever and the said beams for elevating the same, substantially as described.
3. In a cultivator, gear wheels 18, 19, and 20 movably attached to the same, a plate 16 located above said wheels and having teeth formed thereon, a lever attached to the said wheel 20 for turning the same, aspring pawl26 carried by the said lever and adapted to engage with the said teeth, a reciprocating bar 14, means for attaching the said bar to the gear 18, supports attached to the said bar to which one end of the plow beams is attached castings secured to the opposite ends of the said beams, and plow shovels adj ustably secured to the said castings, substantially as described.
4. A cultivator consisting of a square shaft 4, a pole 2 attached to the said shaft, a round shaft 6 attached to the pole below the same, plates 5 connecting the ends of the said shafts, levers 10 movable upon said shaft 4, means for attaching the said levers to the plow beams, a U-shaped bar 1 attached to the said pole and to the shaft 4, a reciprocating bar 14 movably secured to the bar 1, supports 29 adj ustable on said bar 14, castings 31 hinged to the lower end of said supports and uniting the ends of the plow beam, castings attached to the opposite ends of the said beams, plow shovels adjustably' secured to the said castings, and means attached to said bar 14 for operating the same by hand, substantially as set forth.
5. 'A cultivator consisting of shafts 4 and 6 attached to the pole 2 below the same, levers 1O movable upon said shaft 4, means for attaching the said levers to the plow beams, a U-shaped bar 1 fixed to the pole 2 and the shaft 4, bearings 15 attached to the said bar 1, a reciprocating bar 14 movable within said bearings, supports 29 adjustable on said bar and to which one end of the plow beams is attached, gear wheels 18, 19, and movably mounted upon said pole 2, shafts 21 passing through the same, and through the said pole, a plate 16 fixed to the upper end of said shafts, teeth 17 formed in the said plate, a lever 25 attached to the wheel 20, a spring pawl 26 carried by said lever and adapted to engage with said teeth, a forked shaped iron 22 fixed to the wheel 18, and chains 23 attached to the said iron 22 and to the ends of the said reciprocating bar 14, substantially as described.
