HEATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,711, dated April 4, 1893.
Application filed September 25, 1890. Serial No. 366,052- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT M. DIXON, of East Orange, Essex county, and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improved Heater, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in certain improvements in hot-water heaters,which will be more fully described hereinafter.
My object is to attain a coil hot-water heater that shall have a large heat absorbing surface and also a free circulation for a large volume of water. The accompanying drawings illustrate the mechanism by which I derive this object.
Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view of the heater, the line a c of Fig. 2' indicating the plane of the section. Fig. 2 is aplan view partly in section of the heater.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the drawings.
G represents the base, which may be supplied with a flanged ring at its upper edge to support the case E and grate U.
H is the fuel-magazine, which may be used where a self feed of fuel is desired; A, B, D Water containing and heat absorbing coils of pipe, which have their ends joined on the outside of the case E, with the connecting chambers L and M.
The base G is provided with a door S for the removal of ashes.
The case E has a door J, used in attending to fire or in cleaning the coils of pipe.
T is a cook or valve supplied at the lowest point of the water containing system, and used in drawing water from the pipes.
In Figs. 3, P, P, R, R, represent the heat distributing and water return pipes, from the upper connecting chamber M to and through radiators or analogous devices back to the lower connecting chamber L.
It will be observed that'each coil A, B and 'D,.connects with the chamber L, which is their water supply chamber, and also with the chamber M which is their hot-water discharge chamber. Hence all the coils intercommunicate, the pressure and heat in all tend toward equalization and rapid circulation is assured, so that the greater heat in any coil will be given outto the water in all the coils. I
My drawings represent a heater containing three individual sets of coiled pipe, each of which is connected outside the heater to the upper and lower connecting chambers M and L, hence they all communicate with one another. The coil A enters the case E from the connection L, just above the grate, coiling upward until it leaves the upper part of the case and connects at M. This coil is so constructed as to form the sides of the fire-pit and yet allow access to the same from the door J, the convolutions of pipe A being spread apart, as shown, to form an uninterrupted or open fire chamber in line or nearly in line with the door j. This enables me to heat water in coil A more thoroughly than would be the case if the part forming the fire pit were directly connected to the chamber, near its lower end. The coils B and D enter the case adjacent to the lower connection L and coil upward until they leave the case and are connected at the upper chamber M. The pipes P extend from the chamber M and the return pipes R are received by the chamber L.
The main point of my invention is to at tain, by means of two or more coils A, B, D, a heater that shall contain successfully a large heat-absorbing surface and furnish free circulation to a large quantity of water. My system differs essentially from a heater dependent upon a single and continuous coil, because the long single coil offers such resistance to the free circulation of water that some of the water must be converted into steam before getting through the pipe, and that portion of the coil containing steam being exposed to fire is liable to become burned.
Having now described my invention, what I claim is- In a hot water heater, the combination of a furnace body, water chambers L M exterior thereto, a spiral water coil A extending from the upper to the lower portion of said furnace body and communicating with the said chambers L. and M, the lower portion of said coil forming the fire pit for the furnace, and coils B, D, also communicating with said chambers L. M, whereby a rapid circulation of the water and alarge heating surface are had, substantially as described.
