NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN Y. BOYD, OF WIGHITA, KANSAS.
ELECTRICAL INSTRUMENT FOR MEDICAL PURPOSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,520, dated March 28, 1893.
Application filed December 15, 1892. Serial No. 455,212- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN Y. BOYD, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Wichita, county of Sedgwick, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electrical Instruments for Medical Purposes, as hereinafter set forth; and I do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My present invention is an improved electrical instrument and consists of a combination cylinder, closed at both ends, and formed of a number of short cylinders of zinc and other metals together with alternate cylinders of celluloid or other insulating sub stance, as shown by the drawings attached and making a part of this specification in which:
Figure 1, represents a longitudinal section of my improved electrical, urethral, vaginal, and rectal vitalizer. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of one of the cylinders; and Fig. 3 is a cross section of the same.
It is composed of alternate cylinders of zinc and celluloid or other insulating substance, and silver, copper or other metal, so connected with a fluid, either acid, alkaline or neutral, on the inside of the combined cylinder, and moisture or secretions from the mucous membranes from the body, on the outside of said cylinder, as to form a series of electric batteries, when introduced into a mucous cavity, thus forming or producing a voltaic current of electricity at each cell. Each of these cells consists of three cylinders, a negative and positive element A O, separated by an insulator B. The current passes from a cylinder of one element through the affected part, to the cylinder of the opposite element.
I contemplate making the instrument of any desired shape so as to adapt it to the parts to be treated. The instrument may also be composed of as many cells as desired and the cylinders forming such cells may be connected, in any desired manner. As shown they are slipped over the ends of each other.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An electrical instrument for medical purposes composed of cylinders of negative, and positive elements separated by an electrical non-conducting cylinder.
BENJAMIN Y. BOYD.
