APPARATUS FOR MAKING CIGAR-FILLERS.

Be it known that I, NICHOLAS H. Bonc- FELDT, residing at Brooklyn, Kings count-y, and State of New York, have invented an Improved Bunching Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, wherein- Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section of my improved bunching apparatus; and Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the same.

This invention relates to an improvement in apparatus for forming the fillers ot bunches for cigars, and consists mainly in combining a platform with a stationary plate having a curved lip, said curved lip forming a receptacle for the filler of a bunch and a gage for shaping the same, so that an unskilled operator may be employed for making a perfect or nearly perfect bunch.

In the accompanying drawings the letterA represents a platform or scale-pan, the same, if a scale-platform, being supported by a lever B, which is pivoted at a in a stationary frame C. The lever B has at the end opposite to that which carries the platform A a screwthread on which is carried a weight b, which weight on this screw-thread may be adjusted so as to be nearer to or farther away from the pivot a; but instead of adjusting this weight on a screw-thread formed on the lever B, it may be slid on said lever or otherwise may be adjustable thereon. Directly below the pivot ct there is suspended fromthe lever B a threaded pin d which carries a nut or nuts e. By means of these nuts, when moved up or down, the center of gravity maybe adjusted, so that the scale-pan in ascending and descending may move within prescribed limits.

The platform A is by preference formed with a longitudinal cavity or depression f into which the tobacco to be used in a filler can be conveniently placed. But this cavity is not essential, and I do not limit myself thereto.

D is a stationary plate supported on a post or frame E and located so that the scale-platform in descending will rest on it. This stationary plate D has on its outer end, meaning the end which is farthest away from the scale-platform, an upwardly extending and inwardly turned ledge g, whose edge h is shaped to conform generally to the contigu ration of the bunch to be produced. This is fully apparent from Fig. 2. The plate D is removably attached, by means of screws or otherwise, to its support E; or may be in sections, if desired, so that for varying sizes and shapes of cigars, other plates or sections of plates having lips or ledges g with edges 7L shaped to conform to the new bunch to be produced, may be substituted for one another.

In operation the attendant tirst places upon the scale-platform A the tobacco necessary for a bunch, the descent of the platform indicating when the quantity of tobacco necessary for a certain bunch has been thus deposited. Thereupon the attendant draws the tobacco into the cavity or semi-tubular cavity formed by the curved lip g and adjusts the dierent pieces of tobacco while holding them within said cavity in accordance with the gage or guide which is indicated by the shape of the edge h, as the width of the plateindicates the length of the filler. Any tobacco which extends beyond the ends of the plate D can be torn off by ripping them against and across the end of the lip g, and so placing those ends as to make a perfect filler for a bunch. The filler having now been shaped as described, is then drawn off sidewise, while being held by the fingers to maintain its shape, and placed upon the binder to be wrapped in the usual manner. The plate D with its lip may be formed of metal or any other material. The scale may be dispensed with.

Having described my invention, what I claim is- In a cigar-bunching machine, the fixed plate D, having curved lip g and curved edge z., said edge being shaped to conform generally to the configuration of the bunch to be produced, whereby the size, configuration and length of the bunch is determined, as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
