APPARATUS FOR MAKING CIGAR-FILLERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,362, dated March 28, 1893.

Be it known that I, NICHOLAS H. BORG- EELDT, a resident of Brooklyn, Kings county, and State of New York, have invented an Improved Apparatus for Making Cigar-Fillers, of which the following isa specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof, wherein- Figure l represents a side View, partly in section, of my improved apparatus, the line 1-l, Fig. 2, indicating the plane of section. Fig. 2 is an end elevation 0f the apparatus. Fig. 3 is a detail face view of a modified form of yielding pressure-plate. Fig. 4 shows in face view two other forms of yielding pressure-plates and a modification in the manner of attaching them. Fig. is a cross section on the line 5-5, Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a detached View of the pressure plate E shown in Fig. 4.
This invention relates to the employment of an abutting blade on a platform for the purpose of making cigar-iillers, and consists of the combination of parts hereinafter more fully pointed out.
In the drawings the letterA represents the platform or pan of a scale, the drawings indieating a scale having a projecting beam B and a sliding weight C thereon; but the invention is applicable also to a spring-scale or in fact, to any platform or scale of known or suitable construction. Near the scale-pan A is carried by a stationary support D, as in Fig. 1, a blade E which projects above one edge of the scale-pan higher than the latter, and which when pivoted in the support D, is movable on its pivot, as indicated by full and by dotted lines in Fig. l. A suitable spring a (here represented as a rubber strap), or analogous weight, has the tendency of keeping the blade E when pivoted normallyin the vertical position which is indicated by full lines in Fig. l. The shape of the blade E, where it projects above the scale-pan, is to conform in substance to the shape of the cigar whose filler is to be produced on this apparatus. Thus in Fig. 2 a
shape for such a blade E is shown longer and slightly higher than that shown in Fig. 3, the intention being to use such a form of blade E alongside the scale-pan or platform as shall correspond to the shape of iiller intended to be produced. Hence as a matter of convenience, the blade F. can be conveniently removed from and replaced in the forked support D, so that the replacement of one for the other shall be quite convenient. Instead of supporting the blade E by the stationary support D, as shown in Figs. l and 2, I may support the blade E directly on the scale-pan as indicated in Figs. 4 and 5, using the spring c2 for holding the blade normally in an upright position if the pivotal or hinge connection is employed. In this modilied construction it is also quite convenient to substitute smaller blades for larger, or vice versa, which can be accomplished by simply drawing out the fastening pin b, inserting the desired blade F., and replacing the pin. In either case the scale-pan or platform is combined with an adjoining blade E which is close to the edge of the scale-pan or platform.
In using this device I proceed as follows: I iirst place as much tobacco as is needed for the filler upon the scale-pan or other platform. I then move this tobacco with the lingers along the scale-pan or platform toward the blade E and tear the ends of the pieces of tobacco where they project beyond the ends of the blade and otherwise so adjust the bunch of tobacco or filler with my lingers while still on the scale-pan or platform, and while holding it against the blade E until the said mass of tobacco assumes approximately the shape of the desired filler. I can then remove the bunch by sliding or lifting it, or in case the blade is pivoted by crowding the whole mass of tobacco against the movable blade E so as to swing the blade E into the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, thereby removing the mass of tobacco from the apparatus, and I then proceed to place it upon the binder on the usual rolling apron or device where the further manufacture of the cigar is proceeded with. Thus it will be seen that the blade E acts as a gage for the length of the bunch as well as the general form.
By the use of this invention I am enabled to shape the ller on the platform against the blade which is adjoining said platform or scale-pan, and to give to the filler approximately the shape prescribed by the blade, so

as not to be required to rely entirely upon the judgment of the operator. Consequently the cigars produced will have substantially the same shape and size.
I have ascertained that with the use of this apparatus very unskillful persons are enabled to produce satisfactory fillers for cigars. Consequently my apparatus will require less costly help than that now needed in the making of cigars, and nevertheless my cigars will be hand made, in contradistinction to machine made cigars, Whose fillers depend entirely upon mechanism in their construction.
Although I have described the invention as applied to a scale-pan, it is quite evident that many of the advantages of this invention, although not all, will be found if the blade E is applied to a stationary platform, instead of to a scale-platform; and I desire it to be understood that, although I prefer its use in connection With the scale platform, I do not wish to be limited to such a use.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is-
l. The combination of a platform with the blade E having curved edge h and placed adjacent to and projecting above one edge of said platform, the edge of said blade having approximately the form of a cigar iller,all as specified.
2. The combination of a platform With the blade E having approximately the form of a cigar filler, and with means substantially as described for holding said blade pivotally near one edge of the said platform, so that said blade projects normally above the surface of said platform and is capable of being folded into substantial alignment with said platform, all as specified.
