DROP-BOTTOM BUCKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 494,294, dated March 28, 1893. Application filed November 14, 1392. Serial No. 451,899. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. HULETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland,in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and Improved Drop-Bottom Bucket, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a bucket having a centrally hinged, divided bottom and is designed for use with a crane, derrick, or other hoisting machine.
The object of my improvement is to provide a device for handling coal or other fragile material Without breakage. Then the bucket is full its contents are permitted to escape through the bottom, in the manner hereinafter fully described, and the breakage incident upon the use of a tight bottom bucket, from which the contents must be dumped out of the top, is obviated.
That my invention maybe seen and fully understood by others, reference will be had to the following specification and annexed drawings forming part thereof, in which-- Figure 1, is a View of the bucket in partial section, with the bottom open and Fig. 2, a similar view with the bottom closed.

ThebucketP has the drop-bottom P ,hinged at Q, Figs. 1 and 2, to the angle-iron Q, said angle-iron being bolted to opposite sides of the bucket, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. At
the top of the bucket P is the bail R, having the upwardly projecting lip R. The rods U are pivoted, at U, to opposite sections of the bottom P, of the bucket, and extend upward through said bucket and openings in the bail R. to be joined together at the top by the head-block V, Figs. 1, and 2. 7
It will be readily seen by the foregoing description that, if the bucket P remains stationary, by drawing up the head-block Vand rods U the bottom P will be closed, but, if the bucket be held by the bail R and the headblock V released, the bottom will descend or open by its own Weight.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A drop-bottom bucket, consisting of a divided bottom, hinged to a bar secured to and bisecting the bucket, near the base; said bottom being actuated by two rods pivotallyconnected to opposite sections thereof at one end and, after passing through openings in the bail of the bucket, to a head-block at the other end, in combination with any suitable device or mechanism for operating said buckct, substantially as described.
