TARGET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,285, dated March 28, 1893.
Application filed March 30, 1892. Serial No. 427,044- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHANN BAPTIST WAL- TER, work-leader, of Aufsessplatz, No. 4, Nuremberg, in the Kingdom of Bavaria and Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Targets for Automatically Marking the Shot, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a target for automatically indicating the part of the target hit by a projectile, which automatically-marking target requires no weight, springs or other motive power, as the indicators are operated by the missiles or projectiles and give the signals either by strokes of bells or by making electric contact.

The target is constructed with two'plates a b, which are connected with each other by bolts. The front plate a, has an aperture slightly larger than the target, which is slipped between the bands 0' c on the face of the plate a. Between the plates at b two plates 1' h are arranged, and through said plates bolts of various lengths pass, and on said bolts four metal rings 01 e f g are fastened, which rings correspond to the four rings of the target. The above mentioned metal rings are an ranged one behind the other in such a manner that their centers coincide with the centers of the bands 0 c, and thus the centers of said rings will coincide with the centers on the pasteboard target placed between the bands 0 c. If, for example, the projectile hits the center of the outer pasteboard target, the same will be pierced and marked in the usual manner and the smallest plate 9 will be struck by the projectile, whereby the bolt attached to said plate 9 is forced back and operates the hammer is of a bell placed on the rear plate b, as shown in Fig. 1. The bell is thus sounded, indicating that the targethas been struck. If one of the rings d e f g is hit,
the corresponding hammer Z m n is operated and the rod 5 connected with either one of these hammers tilts one of the members 1, 2 or 3, which tilted members are again brought into vertical position by suitable counterweights. The weights of the hammers 70 Z m n push the bolts connected with the rings at e f g to the front again after every shot, so as to set the target automatically for the next marksman.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A target constructed with a casing having a face-plate provided with an aperture, a series of concentric rings arranged behind the face-plate within the area of the aper ture, bolts connected with each of said rings, hammers operated by said bolts and a gong on which the hammers can act, substantially as set forth.
2. In a target, the combination with afaceplate having an aperture, of concentric rings arranged behind the face-plate within the area of the aperture, a hammer for each ring, which hammers can be operated from the several rings, a gong on which the hammers can act, tilting numbers and arms on the hammers for acting on said numbers, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a face plate having an aperture, of a series of rings arranged behind the face-plate within the area of the aperture, bolts on each ring, a hammer for each ring, which hammers are operated by the bolts of the respective rings, a gong on which the hammers can act, a series of bars suitably pivoted and weighted to hang vertically and arms on the hammers adapted to act on the weight at the ends of the bars and numbers on said bars, substantially as set forth.
