ELIZABETH PHILLIPS, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
BED-PAN OR COMMODE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,079, dated March 21, 1893.
Application filed June 18,1892. Serial No. 437,119. (No model.) Patentedin England May 24, 1892, No. 9,848.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIZABETH PHILLIPS, a sub ect of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at No. 4 Upper Bedford Place, Russell venting the difiusion of unhealthy and unpleasant odors, and at the same time permitting of the free inspection of their contents without necessarily exposing the latter.
7 In the accompanying drawings I have represented one method in which my invention may be carried into effect.
Figure 1 represents a plan, Fig. 2 a side view and Figs. 3 and 4 cross sections, of a bed pan provided with my improvements. Fig. 5 is a side view of the same with some of the parts removed. Fig. 6 is a plan showing the pan as in use, and Fig. 7 represents abed pan fitted with two slides. a
In carrying my invention into efiect I may construct the apparatus mainly of metal, enameled, tinned, or. otherwise protected against oxidation, or it may be made principally of earthenware or of glass.
The drawings represent the same as constructed of metal; a is the pan, which is preferably of circular form, but is connected with a rectangular frame a, the upper edge a of which forms a seat or lower guide for the slide 1); to this frame a is hinged, at a a frame 0 carrying a curved seat 0 and a flange 0 which latter serves as the upper guide for the slide 1) when the parts are locked together as shown in the drawings. The slide 1) fits somewhat tightly between the guides 0. c and it has mounted in a frame b attached thereto, a sheet of glass b The slide b is provided at its front edge with a plate 19 fitting closely against the fronts of the frames at and 0, so as to make as tight a joint as possible. Thus, on using the bed pan constructed as above described, the frames a and c are locked together and the slide 1) is drawn out of its guides, as represented at Fig. 6, so as to fully expose the pan a. Then, immediately after the patient has used the pan, the slide 1) is pushed fully in, so as to effectually trap the contents of the pan, which latter can be then removed without fear of distributing an oifensive or injurious odor and the contents can be safely examined at leisure through the glass 12 An aperture 0 is formed in the upper part of the frame 0, and a passage, closed by a spring valve 12 is formed in the slide or frame I) to enable a funnel or spout to be inserted into the pan 0. for the introduction of disinfectanttherein if required. When required the frame 0 can be thrown back on its hinges and the slide or frame I) completely removed, after which the pan and its fittings can be completely cleansed.
In some cases I fit the pan with an additional slide 01, as represented at Fig. 7, said slide being of metal or other suitable material and serving to inclose the contents of the pan, so as to prevent any exhalation from having access to the glazed slide, thereby enabling the contents of the pan to be examined at leisure.
I would here remark that I do not confine myself to the details of construction herein shown and described, as the glass frame may be otherwise fitted and operated to open and close the pan, and leather or rubber can be used to obtain tight joints.
It will be readily understood that the pan of a commode or other similar article can be fitted as herein described.
Having fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a sanitary pan for the use of invalids and others, the combination of the pan, a frame for holding the pan, a movable air-tight or close-fitting cover provided with a glazed aperture working in said frame, and a movable seat substantially as shown and described.
2. In a sanitary pan for the use of invalids and others, the combination of the pan, a
frame for holding the pan, a movable airtight or close-fitting cover, fitted with a glazed with a glazed aperture, a movable cover proaperture Working in said frame, and a movvided with an aperture closed by a spring able seat provided with an aperture closed by Valve, substantially as shown and described. a spring valve substantially as shown and de- ELIZABETH PHILLIPS 5 scribed.
3. In a sanitary pan for the use of invalids WVitnesses: and others the combination of a pan, a frame B. J. B. -MILLS, for holding said pan, a plurality of movable CLAUDE K. MILLS.
air-tight or close-fitting covers Working in Both of 23 Southampton Buildings, London, 10 said frame, one of said covers being provided England, Patent Agents.
