STIRRUP FOR SADDLES.

SPECIFICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,005, dated March 21, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

Beit known that I, JOSEPH A. KREWSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Rogersville, in the county of Webster and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stirrups for Riding-Saddles; and I do hereby declare the followingto bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements in riding-stirrups.

The object of the invention is to provide a stirrnp with a heating device whereby the foot of the rider may be kept warm; and it consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification: Figure l is a side View of a stirrnp constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation with the liaps removed and the lamp partially extended. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View.

A designates the loop of the stirrnp, to which is rigidly secured the foot warmer consisting of a metal box for the lamp having near its upper edge a line of perforations b, the forward end of said box being rounded while the rear end is provided with a door held closed by a suitable bail.

O C designate aps which are secured to the loop of the stirrnp, the front flap having attached thereto a strip which extends around the front end of the box above the line of perforations b, so that the heat escaping through said perforations in rising will be confined by the flap, the opening formed by the rear flaps being closed bythe users foot.

E designates the lamp, which is shaped to rest within the box or foot-warmer, and is preferably provided with two wick-tubes and a central lling tube which may be closed by a threaded or spring stopper, so that when the lamp is placed within the foot-warmer this stopper will rest or bear against the top wall of the box and hold the lamp securely therein.

Thek top plate of the foot-warmer or box may be provided with a layer of non-combustible material, such as asbestus paper or cloth.

The aps hereinbefore described will protect the forward portion of the foot of the rider, and when the lamp is lighted the heat will be confined so that the ankle as well as the sole of the foot Will be warmed. The strip hereinbefore referred to, which is secured to the loop of the stirrnp and flap, may be of sheet-metal and will serve to hold the apsin contact with the upper edges of the footwarmer.

I am aware that prior to my invention it has been proposed to provide a foot-warmer with a removable lamp, and also that it is not broadly new to provide a stirrnp heated from an oil reservoir.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination of a riding-stirrnp having attached to the loop thereof a hollow casing, an oil burner adapted to be secured Within said hollow casing, and flaps attached to the loop of the stirrnp to provide a covering for the foot of the rider and lamp casing, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination in a riding stirrnp, of a foot-warmer consisting of a metal case having an end door and a line of perforations in the side walls thereof, of flaps carried by the stirrnp and adapted to retain the heat given off from the foot-warmer, for the purpose set forth.

3. In a riding-stirrnp, the combination of a loop carrying a foot-Warmer, a strip attached to the loop, and a cover secured to the loop and adapted to contact with said strip, substantially as shown, whereby the cover is kept out of contact with the heated portion of the foot-warmer, for the purpose set forth.
