SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 493,848, dated March 21, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, FERDINAND WEsEL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lock-Ups for Printers Chases, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved lockup for printers chases which are adapted for locking up larger forms for which the ordinary quoins cannot be used, and by which still a very strong and reliable locking of the forms can be obtained: and the invention consists of a printers chase provided with a recess at its inner bottom-edge and with an L- shaped adjustable locking-bar that is applied to the form by means of set-screws, the heads of which are located in recesses'in the exterior wall of the chase, said locking-bar being guided in the recess of the chase and used Without coins for locking up forms of larger size.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of a printers chase with my improved look-up. Fig. 2 is a top-view of a portion of the same, drawn on a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a side-view of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a vertical transversesection on line 4 4, Fig. 1 also on a larger scale.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a printers chase which is provided at two adjacent sides with a locking-bar B of L-shaped cross-section, the lower flange b of which is guided in a recess a at the inner corner of the wall of the chase, as shown clearly in Fig. 4. The L-shaped locking-bar B is adjusted to the required distance from the chase by means of set-screws O that pass through the wall of the chase and the heads of which are located Serial No. 436,330. in recesses d in the outside of the chase, so that the heads of the screws do not project beyond the exterior face of the chase and cannot interfere with the use of the same. Whenever a form of larger size is to be locked into the chase, so that the use of the quoins is not possible, it is locked up by means of the locking-bars B which are adjusted to the form by means of set-screws 0. Owing to the L-shaped cross-section of the locking-bar B, the strength of the same is considerably in creased and the bending of the same and consequently the inaccurate or unreliable looking of the form prevented.

A chase can be used with the auxiliary lockup without quoins and will prevent the lifting up of the type, as the bottom flange abuts against the recessed corner of the chase.

The locking-bar forms a very useful and convenient attachment to printers chases, so that they are adapted to a greater extent for the difierent uses to which they are applied in printing offices.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination, with a printers chase having a recess at its inner lower edge, of an L- shaped locking-bar extending along the inner wall of the chase, and set-screws passing through the Wall of the chase for the purpose of adjusting the locking-bar, substantially as set forth.
