OIL-PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 493,694, dated March 21, 1893. Application filed March 9, 1892- Serial No. 424,351. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDMUND ENGLISH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drawing or Pumping Oil or other Liquids from Barrels; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to devices for pumping oil, and the like, from barrels, and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts of the samehereinafter fully described and claimed.
The drawing illustrates a side elevation of a barrel, a central upper portion being broken away, a vertical sectional view of the emptying tank and measuring scale, a side elevation of the pump, and an enlarged detail view of the drop-pipe and the securing-springs for retaining the pump-tube in position in the barrel.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawing, A, designates an emptying tank which is provided on its bottom near each end with supporting-legs by which it may be properly supported so as to permit proper communication with the bung-hole of the barrel or other oil-receptacle, through the medium of a short drop-pipe, B. This drop-pipe B is provided with an upper peripheral flange which engages, or comes in contact, with the material of the barrel-body immediately surrounding the bung-hole, and thereby assists in supporting the measuring-tank or emptying-tank A, in place upon the barrel,--or other oil-receptacle,from which the oil is to be pumped. The drop-pipe B is provided at its upper end with internally disposed holdingsprings S for holding the pump-stock in position, and at the proper elevation, Within the barrel or other oil-receptacle to be emptied.
The measuring-tank A is provided at one end with a graduated scale C by means of Which.the quantity of oil in the measuringtank can be ascertained at anytime upon inspection of the same; and at the other end the measuring tank is provided with aspigot D through which the measured contents of the measuring-tank, are drawn off into any convenient or proper vessel.
The lid E of the tank or measuring receptacle, is provided with acentral elevated portion or receptacle E for the reception, when at rest, of the head or hand-piece of the plunger-rod of the oil-pump. The legs of the measuring-tank extend sufficientlyfar down upon the exterior barrel surface, to give said tank ample and stable support in its position.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentof the United States, is
The combination with a barrel or like receptacle for containing oil, provided in its top side with a bu ng-hole, of a drop-pipe provided with a sustaining encircling flange at its upper end and diametrically disposed slots beneath said encircling flange'and inwardly projecting holding springs S, S, at the upper end of drop-pipe adapted to be forced outwardly by the pump-stock when passed downwardly through the measuring-tank into the barrel, substantially as specified.
